Personal history

Pre-Birth/Birth

Red Oak Drac met and fell in love with a pixie man. Although this man seemed to love her back, he treated her like dirt, lied to her constantly, and used her for her money. On the day she discovered that she was pregnant, Red Oak tried to break free from the relationship, but the man observed that he was so ingrained into her life--living with her, paying rent she could otherwise not afford on her own--that his leaving would ruin any chances of Red being able to take care of the baby. Red kept him around until baby Hawthorn was born, but upon seeing her little girl for the first time, decided that she never wanted her daughter to be in a relationship like she was and that she had to lead by example. Red spoke with her family about the issue. Her mother allowed her and the baby to move back in, and Red was able to break off the relationship for good. Red gave Hawthorn her last name to preserve her culture, regardless of what powers she would end up showing.

Infancy

Red worked hard to take care of her baby, and suddenly an opportunity presented itself at her work. She took a temporary position in Capital City where she met and worked with a man named Stephen Wolf. Stephen very quickly took a liking to her, but Red was not all that interested because of her recent past experience with relationships. It was a while before Red warmed up to Stephen, but it happened naturally, without rush or push by Stephen. They began to date when Hawthorn was two. At that point, she had shown no signs of powers, like most witches do in infancy, so Red assumed that she was a Cancel Out. Hawthorn was a shy child, but warmed up to Stephen pretty quickly. He always had the newest comm style, and Hawthorn liked to watch the screensaver of sea monsters jumping in and out of the water. Stephen did not mind that Red had a child. He became as caring towards Hawthorn as he did for Red.   When Red's temporary position was finished, she gave Stephen an ultimatum: move away with her to Magic City or break up. Stephen decided to move with them, so they all moved back to Magic City and moved into their home. Hawthorn began to call Stephen dad with no qualms. As far as she was concerned, he was her dad.

Childhood

Hawthorn began to show her powers at age 6, beginning with small things her parents barely noticed, and graduating to more obvious things, like carving her name into the side of her dresser using magic so that it could not be removed. At first, it just seemed that she had witch magic, but when she used a hiding spell on the candy she was hoarding in her bed, ants came to eat them, covering her in the middle of the night and causing her to scream. Her parents discovered, she confessed what happened, and her wings popped out. Then, they understood immediately what that meant: she was a Mesh, pixie witch. Although her parents were worried, as they knew that Meshes were considered bad and overpowered, they knew they could raise her to be good. They told her what her powers meant, and continued to imbue in her the importance of not telling people that she was a Mesh. Her mother cast a spell over her wings to make them enfold themselves into her back so precisely that no one would be able to tell that her wings were there.   As she grew, she learned to bottle her negative emotions, to only feel them when she was truly alone, as they were the source of great destruction. She could make deals for things she would regret as her vision clouded with anger or grief. She was scared of what she could do. As such, she became an introverted, staying away from others and preferring to escape into books. She filled her mind with daydreams of being the heroine of a story, someday some horrific evil and saving the day. As she grew older, however, she realized that most would consider her the villain of her story. She began to believe that herself.

Schooling and Into Teen Years

Hawthorn had few friends, but they were good friends. She did not want to lie to them, as she lied to everyone else, so she told the partial truth and pretended that was her secret. Her friends knew that she was a witch, hiding her identity in that of a Cancel Out. While they did not completely understand, they respected the sanctity of the secret. When she was with her friends, she could feel normal, as if she really did not have pixie magic at all.   When Rowan was born, all that seemed to change. True, that Hawthorn loved her with all her heart, but the baby also made her feel sidelined, riddled with too much responsibility before she could handle it. Since she had no way to deal with her stress, Hawthorn let it build. Along with this stress, she began to develop depression, feeling trapped and like she could never truly be herself. She didn't want to talk to her parents for fear that they would tell that she was overreacting or that they would brush it off. She harbored it for a long time, and it festered inside her.   In secondary school, she met a pixie boy. She had little flings before, but she wanted to help this one. He was depressed, like she was, felt outcast and unloved. He wanted so badly to find someone who could understand him that he chased after every girl. She befriended him, gave him advice, and began to care for him. It was inevitable that he would look to her for romance. She knew it was coming, and although she was not sure if she wanted a romance with him, she thought that maybe she could be the one to help him. They began to date. He rushed into his feelings with her, and she let him guide her. They said they were in love two weeks in, and got secretly engaged after one month. The boy was excited. He wanted two children, a house, and a good wife who stayed at home while he worked. Hawthorn did not want any of that, but no matter how many times she told him, he didn't listen. Soon enough, he was trying to horde her time, pulling her away from her friends, convincing her that they didn't care about her like he did. With her depression already trying to convince her of these things, it wasn't hard for her to believe. She distanced herself from them. When she took an internship as a bookkeeper, he yelled at her, trying to convince her that she didn't need to work, not ever again. They were nearing graduation, and their plans could all fall into place. But Hawthorn wanted that job. She loved it. She told him that she would keep the job until they went off to college, and then he tried to stop her from going to college. He said that she didn't need it and began to purposefully bring her down in order to keep her with him and away from college.   Both she and the boy reached a low point. He was afraid of losing her. She was afraid of herself. In the worst moment of their relationship, the boy, overcome with grief, attempted to choke himself to death. Hawthorn managed to save him, but she never managed to get the image out of her mind of what he had tried to do. Things were spiraling out of control. She knew that he loved her, but now his life was on the line. Hawthorn didn't know if she could back out of the relationship. They had already tried for children, gotten engaged, made plans for the future. She truly cared about him, but now she was also afraid. He didn't even know that she was a Mesh. If she couldn't go to college, she would never learn how to properly control her powers, something she had always hoped for. She knew she wouldn't be able to repress them forever. One day, she talked to her father about not going to college, and he laughed. He reminded her that she had always wanted to go to college, that all her previous plans ld there. She didn't need to throw that all away just because some boy told her to. Hawthorn considered this a while, and during this time, the Wizard came to her with his offer to take his job when he retired. Hawthorn could not tell him of her powers, and she knew that taking that job would risk not only the Wizard knowing, but everyone. It was not a risk she could take. She refused. Still, the Wizard wished her great things in the future, urging her on to do whatever she wanted, because he knew she could.   So she did. She broke up with the pixie boy just after graduation. It was rough and hairy. They screamed at each other in the main square. But it was done. She knew that if he was angry with her, if he thought that she was at fault, that he wouldn't want her back. She felt free for a moment before the guilt and sorrow seemed to swallow her whole.

College

Hawthorn went to college in the worst fit of depression she had ever been in. Time and time again, she found herself having thoughts of what happened with the pixie boy, wondering if she had done the right thing, if he was still alive. She had nightmares of the moment when he tried to kill himself, sometimes with her in his place. She made some friends, but kept them all at a distance. She wasn't sure she knew how to have friends anymore. She did well in her classes as she threw herself into her studies. Her professors were fond of her, and she would occasionally have fun nights with her friends. But mostly, she felt alone.   In one of her classes, she met a witch whom she was instantly attracted to. She didn't want to get into a relationship so soon after the pixie boy, but something about this witch made her want to know more. They talked, shared notes. Hawthorn found that this witch was intelligent and funny. They danced around each other for months until they finally got together. They were together four years, and when they graduated, they began to make plans for their future. They didn't want children, but they wanted all they could get from their future careers. They planned to be apart for a bit of time in order to best help prepare each of them for their future. Hawthorn had purchased her bookshop, and began to sell from there, while the witch went on to another college to specialize in medicine. It was a struggle, but their love was strong enough to handle the distance.   Then, one night, when the witch visited her shop, Hawthorn came clean about her pixie abilities. The witch was shocked and appalled. Hawthorn was hurt immensely by this. They agreed to break up. After that, Hawthorn did all she could to be the best shop owner she could, swearing off romance. She thought herself unworthy of love. Still, there was some part of her that knew she needed help. She began to try and work through her depression. She began to make progress. Visiting her parents and sister helped a lot. She was just beginning to relax into herself a bit when the attack happened.   Hawthorn's grief for the death of her family overflowed her bottle of negative emotions that she kept locked away. Her wings broke through their enchantment, and everything in her came loose. She can hardly remember much of what happened, but she remembers that she felt like she just wanted to bury all of the military for what they had done, not just to her family, but to all of Magic City. That desire turned into sand, and thus bore the desert. She quickly escaped the sand, but realized that she left her witch crystal behind. She knew she could not look for it alone.
