Phaethon

Strange portals erupt from thin air, letting loose ideas and creatures from realms known and unknown. These unstable doors from every realm open and shut with no reason. The fabric of reality is bending, warping, and brings great terror and wonderful wishes from these random and sometimes violent events. An estranged mystic, bent on bringing death to his allies and enemies is the source of the happenings. Psyonic energy, an unknown and unexplored magic path, has only one equal, the power of Ki. Ki magic was once imbued in gemstones and used as a Ki focusing instrument by monks of the oldworld, once known as punchwizards. Their traditions and ways lost, the gems are scattered across dangerous and peaceful lands alike. Mounting these gems in the oldworld temples and towers will stabilize the area and shield it from psionic energies. Once all gemstones have been returned to their temples a single portal will be stuck open, stabilized, bringing with it everything, eventually even demogorgon and hell itself. Entering the portal brings adventurers to the mystic's hideaway realm, scattered with riches and trinkets from every pocket of the universe.   A war on pause between the reigning two nations of Phaethon causes strife for those who profit from it and gives way for government budgets to imagine great engineering feats and create wonders for the world to gaze upon. Each year, the two factions participate in the National Flex Competition, a way for the nations to settle their differences in a challenge of innovation. The last five years have brought wonderful inventions; the first year brought the construction of The White City from Ravenshroud and Castle Great from Noxus. Year two saw R.S.'s Maxbridge (a giant but portable deployable bridge) and Noxus' Launchport, a bullet-train-like transit system. Year three brought new farm and irrigation techniques, and aqueducts for Ravenshroud, and the flight balloon (hot air balloon) from the eastern empire. Year four introduced a man-made crystal-iridescent lake, and Year five Noxus created the Longshot, a massive artillery gun that has range to cover almost the entire continent. This was a turning point in the cold-war, making it less... cold.
