Idioms of the Dwarfs

Obviously a lot of the Dwarven expressions relate to mining and forging. But there's more to be learned than just that.
A gem in the hand is worth two in the ground
There's nothing a Dwarf likes more than acquiring gems and precious metals. Having is important to the Dwarves - buried treasure's no good to anyone!
Where would you be without your clan?
A dwarf without their clan would have no stronghold, no protection and no wealth, as every item of significance is held in common. But more importantly, they would have no purpose. A dwarf cannot mine alone, has no use for gemstones alone and cannot continue a clan lineage alone.
Go in strength. Return with honour.
This traditional farewell is used when a Dwarf or group of Dwarves leave the stronghold, usually on some important mission for the clan (why else would they leave?).
When the war horn sounds
The time of battle, a grim time, but an opportunity to do your duty with honour.
Whatever it takes, to get what's ours.
It would be unwise to cross a dwarf on a matter of their clan. Stealing a personal item from one dwarf will anger them. Stealing a clan heirloom will earn you a sworn enemy for your life and for your descendants.
He's not the sharpest pick in the cart
Tunneling through stone for mining and stronghold construction is a significant part of any mountain dwarf's life.
Like the ring of hammer on anvil
A sound that tells a dwarf he's home.
As tasty as a mouthful of gravel
Means: delicious! Dwarves enjoy the taste of powdered gravel sprinkled on meat as seasoning.
