Mineshafts of the Predecessors
Gold is useless as a structural metal. In a world without electricity, its only use is that it looks very pretty. The strange, red crystals of Hell must have held the same value for whatever species once inhabited the planet. As the planet is mostly uninteresting stone with very little metal content, it is understandable that the mineshafts were made to mine the rare crystal by the Hellish Predecessors.
Geography
Long, cavernous holes that go deep, deep into the planet. There are occasionally outposts in which it is assumed living spaces once were but the wood and such has since disintegrated. Evidence of wood once being there though has been found.
