Airship

The airship is a lighter-than-air aircraft consisting of a gondola suspended beneath a hydrogen-filled balloon. It was invented in 1292 AE by Herovinci Turbine of Techence. Only there airships have been produced - the Philosopher, the Christo, and the Eliza. After a disastrous maiden voyage in 1296 AE, the technology was sealed.

Description

The airship consists of a gondola suspended under a hydrogen-filled balloon. The gondola is constructed from wood with metal supports and closely resembles the hull of a sloop - but the airship gondola is much flatter on the bottom and features a descending crow's nest. The composition of the balloon is unknown, but some have speculated that it was made of wooly dragon bladders sewn into a canvas shell.

History

The airship was invented in 1292 AE by Herovinci Turbine in Techence. Four years later in 1296 AE, the Ministry of Techence commissioned three airships - the Philosopher, the Christo, and the Eliza. The latter two were named after the current prime minister, Christo Turbine, and his wife, Eliza Turbine.

Herovinci captained the maiden voyage, which was tasked with sailing east past Edge Island - a feat that no sea-faring vessels had accomplished. All three ships set sail, but only the Philosopher returned, manned by a threadbare crew of Herovinci and a few sailors. They told tales of sailing past Edge Island and being attacked by flying men able to throw lightning as if it was a spear. According to Herovinci, both the Christo and Eliza were lost.

After the disastrous maiden voyage, the airship technology was sealed in the archives of the University by order of the Ministry of Techence and Herovinci was banished from Techence.
