The walled city of Pembina

A crowded medieval style city, two, three and the occasional four story half timbered houses lining the streets. Pembina has many shops which over hang the lower levels. Some stone, brick and sandstone homes and structures exist.   Outside of the walls the city continues, its success of a trading and cultural hub couldn't contain it within. The homes outside are more modest, one and two story homes. The inhabitants of these areas do not put much effort in upkeep as although no attacks on the city itself have occurred in a hundred years, the structures outside the walls are usually pulled down if an army approaches to limit cover, and to prevent the enemy to set fire to the outlining buildings. Why paint, or replace rotting beams when it could be pulled down by fate and ill luck.   The streets of the city are mostly unplanned. Some areas by the palace have been torn down the increase the boulevards and straighten the streets. Other places there are twists and turns, allys gradually narrowing until homes touch and lean against one another.   The half timber homes, has the great beams painted to withstand the elements. The mud between the beams is generally whitewashed. There is white mud, black (really a green grey)mud and yellow mud in the surrounding area which is brought in spread on the homes, thus giving more then just one colour in the city. Green and grey slate roofs cover the homes.   The city walls are ancient, with no sieges or threat of for a hundred years no work or maintenance has been done. The walls, towers and gates are in good shape with the exception of a few sections of wall which the mortar has turned brittle or has eroded away, here there are crumbling areas.
