Grand Duchy of Glomhand

The Grand Duchy of Glomhand

The Grand Duchy of Glomhand was once part of the larger island nation of Lightlean. The theocratic kingdom would frequently surpress the rights of the people who did not have access to the temples and priests of the land. This resulted in civil unrest, especially amongst the people of the modern day Grand Duchy of Glomhand.

It was the intervention of Ghostfordian raiders, a fleet blown off course by a giant storm, that aided the independence of Glomhand into the Grand Duchy it is today. As a result there is a small enclave of Ghostfordians within the borders of the duchy.

The Grand Duchy is mostly temperate, although trees are sparse in the wind blasted islands. Many of the smaller islands in the eastern half of the archipelago are owned by Glomhand. Most are abandoned, although the island of Thorngmide, the southermost of the Thorngmide islands, acts as the main diplomatic city to the mainland of Pania.

Politics

The Grand Duke of Glomhand serves as the leader to the duchy. His is figurehead position with some limited powers in the realms of diplomacy and trade. A council of autocratic leaders fill the role of "Duke of.." Dealing with their specified domain with the oversight of a council of respected individuals in the field.

The current Grand Duke is Duchess Wealsone of House Wythe

Culture

Glomhanders are primarily human who reject the theocracy of the Lightlean religion. Whilst not completely atheistic there is often a strong distrust of religious zealotry, and those with a faith too strong. Debate and arguement are prized methods of problem solving by Glomhanders, and as a result they love a good haggling session.

Celebrations and festivities are indulged upon with regularity, however, there is some degree of mistrust of substances that addle the senses as many are fearful that someone would take advantage of an altered state of thinking to prove themselves superior in the world of wit.

In the northernmost section of the realm there is a enclave of Ghostfordians who practice their culture and religion. There is a famous arena in the city of Shroutumn where Ghostfordian descendants will often take part in honour duels in a bastardisation of their cultures honour through martial bravery. The Ghostfordians here practice a form of the Ghostfordian religion.

Religion

There is no official religion in Glomhand, private faith is encouraged, however, public declarations of faith are frowned upon greatly. The exception to this is the Ghostfordian faith which is practiced exclusively in its own enclave. The faith here has been watered down from the original wherein the deities have become personificatiopns of virtuous traits in people, and thus have lost most of the spiritual aspects of the faith, making it much more palatable to the Glomhanders at large.
