Duchy of Kethrion

The Duchy of Kethrion

The Highlands of Kethrion provide a natural defence for the region from each of its neighbours. The valley of Kethrion wherein the Duchy's seat of power provides a natural basin to repel attackers, especially in the depths of winter. When the succession crisis hit the Elulalfanian empire the Duchy of Kethrion also raised its banner in rebellion. It did not seek to take over the empire, but rather secure independence from it.

The Duchy of Kethrion traded rare minerals from its mountainous mines with the newly arrived Steamian empire in exchange for weaponry that would allow them to defend their cities from Elulalfanian armies seeking to reclaim the land. The artillery, as it became known, was so effective that after a siege lasting one day the Elulalfanian army retreated and surrendered to the demands of Kethrion.

Politics

Kethrion is a Duchy and is ruled by a singular Duke. The current Duke of Kethrion is Uthorim of House Thilnel.

Culture

As time carried on the courtly ways of Kethrion become more isolated to the noble class, becoming more extreme with even more elaborate rituals around etiquette and intrigue. The peasant classes however have become more and more enamoured with the technologies introduced by the Steamian empire. They and embrace the knowledge and technologies fully.

There is something of a schism between the classes as a result of this, the nobility seeing artificing and technology as a means to preserve their culture, whilst the peasants see its as progress. Rumours abound that the Steamian empire has been funding dissenters to the current system in the hopes of bringing Kethrion into the Steamian fold.

Religion

The Kethrion people continue to worship their ancestors, but The Great Emporer is held as a great opressor and it said that should the spirits of the Kethrion ancestors wane in strength that he will visit great evil upon the land.
