Dr. Tobias Sable

Dr. Tobias Sable (a.k.a. The Historian, Death, Life)

Dr. Tobias Sable (Toby) is the adoptive (sponsor) father of Demo Sable.   In his current life, he is mostly known as The Historian, the resident history professor at the Institution.   The Historian raised Demo mostly on his own in Zion. Despite the known reputation of being a slight hermit in Zion, in his youth, The Historian had a reputation for backpacking across the world. This is evident through the various photographs in his home, and his relentless account of his travels to Demo and his friends.   The Historian is also known to host the only known physical library in all of Zion (possibly the world) as most of the world progressed towards the digitization revolution of information, physical books had been deemed obsoleted and "destroyed". The Historian, however, collects any remaining physical books.   The death of The Historian serves as a catalyst for Demo, to leave and explore his own journey.   Moreover, unbeknownst to Demo and his peers (which The Historian also teaches), before backpacking across the world, The Historian estranged himself from his family. The actual reason has never been discussed with Demo or anyone.   Before he became a historian, Tobias is mostly known as a member of The Four Horsemen, as the eldest sibling, Death/Life. After many millennia of watching over the deaths of people (and ensuring their safe passage into the netherworld), Death has become fascinated with mortals, in particular, he has become infatuated with the concept of romantic love and has his mind set out on experiencing romance.    Over time, Death lives many lives with his immortality intact pretending to fall in love with many people (man or woman), he still feels empty, like he had not lived a full life. Until he finally meets a woman he thinks is the love of his life (an undisclosed woman, many have speculated, it may be Dr. Augusta Calliope's mother). The woman while in a relationship with Death, commits adultery after a miscarriage with Death's demigod child, and thus for the first time Death has experienced true grief and loss. Death in anguish abandons his personal post (as a magical pillar of the world) and foregoes his duties of guiding the dead to the netherworld, thus also relinquishing his immortality   Death then wanders the world observing humans from the actual perspective of a mortal man, something he feels might have held him back before. Over time, Death has learned the real meaning of Life (experiencing many different forms such as having children and witnessing the death of his children, and partners).   However, since leaving his post, his duties have fallen to his three sisters (War/Peace, Famine/Bounty, and Pestilence/Health), see The Four Horsemen article for more information.    Death, feeling that his duties may be too much for his sisters, albeit divided between the three, with each of their own duties, has set out a serious of events to choose an heir.
