The Hungering Squall

a virtually-unnavigable ocean to the south of Caracar, it is an endlessly storming patch of sea the size of a small continent infused with acid that eats away at the hulls of ships in a matter of minutes. furthermore, the surface of the water occasionally boils up into a mass of all-consuming sea-elementals in the form of locusts.
It renders travel along the southern coast of Caracar, as well as out to sea for hundreds of miles, completely untenable. as such, trade east-west through this part of the world either travels over land, or it the ages when its existence is known, via a longer route along the northern shore of the southern continent.
rumours persist of a lost island in the midst of the hungering squall.
