One of the larger towns of The Learned Canyons, Rubric is a centre for the collection, sorting, and translation of texts found throughout the surrounding miles of shelving.
hometown of Cusisme, Death-In-Autumn and Sespedel.
Demographics
Government
Rubric is run by a Petty Kinma. the current person in the role is old and feeble-minded, the position being very much a sinecure to repay him for his continual warring in the Giterikin Civil War. A relatively peaceful town, Rubric manages to muddle along just fine without its lord.
Defences
there is a small and informal local militia to guard the town, however it is sufficiently far from the frontlines of the Giterikin Civil War that the military capabilities are pretty minimal. of more concern is the theft of valuable Paired Pages, which is mostly a matter of private security for particular merchants or businesses.
More generally, it is agreed by most of the powers that be that they stand to gain more from Rubric remaining as relatively free as it is than from its seizure or destruction.
Industry & Trade
there are two primary industries in
- collating, translating, and copying books: books from all over the surrounding area are brought here by prospectors, where they are sold to specialist collectors who translate them, compare them to other books, and develop bodies of knowledge. This knowledge is mostly esoteric, but some pieces are so valuable that representatives of every major political and economic faction operate in the town - either covertly or in public - continually seeking new findings for untold different reasons.
- Producing Paired Pages - a relatively minor industry as there is no scriptorum nearby, but keen seekers often use the town as a base of operations, a place to trade their finds, as well as a place to find help in locating the other end of their Paired Page.
Infrastructure
Chosen for its relatively wide canyons - around 30m from shelf to shelf - the centre of the town is now entirely roofed over, excepting a few light-wells, and is mostly lit by candles made from locally-harvested wax. the buildings are densely packed in most places, with narrow streets cobbled with broken printstones and tablets.
History
founded around 800 years ago, Rubric has grown slowly over time with very little drama or excitement.
Geography
Located in the southeast of the Canyons, Rubric is relatively quick and easy to access from both The Giteri and The Srem, the wider canyons leading out of the region being part of the reason for its founding and growth. Tt also possesses a well, vital in the dry canyons.
