Background: Born with the gift of wings, Katherine was chained to the ground to stop her from flying. For most of her childhood, Katherine lived with her village on a small island inn the gulf near Glatkori (too small to show up on the map), no boats entered or left. Each villager takes the protection of a beast a different way and Katherine's village believed it was keeping her on the ground away from sight. Katherine was loved most of her childhood, but the chains on her ankles only made her crave the sky more. When the older beast dead, this love vanished and she was neglected and they grew to fear her as if she would hurt them if they approached her.
One day when Katherine was 16, she managed to steal the key for her chains and fly out the window of her room. She never looked back since. Katherine flew north to land but was too weak to make it. She was picked up by a pirate, the captain of the crew, Iris VanDam, decided to accept Katherine into her crew because she could fly from ship to ship quickly and get to the shore faster than any boat in the fleet. (But really she took Katherine in because Iris loves children and Katherine reminded her of her older sister who she lost). Since then Katherine has lived as a pirate and as a daughter to Iris. The pirates have been all over the western shore or Pacellum and now resides off the shore of Glatkori fighting the Duke of the city and his underground sex trade. Katherine has spent the next six months leading up to meeting Skarlet infiltrating his trading network, but can't do anymore because her wings would give her away. She also spends that time learning how to flirt with everyone, men and women.
She keeps her upbringing close to her chest. Even Iris, who she trusts the most, doesn't know everything that happened to her during her childhood. All Iris knows is the reason Katherine can't stand things touching her ankles.
Evolution: Being trapped made Katherine love the sky and yearn to be free. The longing make Katherine resourceful and determined. Being able to touch the sky when she gained freedom made her learn to love the ground and sea and see the importance of simpler things like love and family while still looking for a horizon and to the sun. The chains made Katherine hate her ties to the Red King and she'll run from the other beasts to avoid the shockles of destiny and duty, but after meeting Skarlet she'll learn she's not a chain to Kather but the wind beneather her wings that helps her reach her dreams.
Priorities: Katherine spends most of her time doing three things: working, flirting, of flying. Everyone is done because she is free and she would stop the moment she felt tied down. She also finds time to practice all the instruments they take when raiding the Glatkori ships, enjoying the sound that to her seem so free.
Motivation: her only goal is to be free and avoid anything that tries to cage her again. She'll run from anything until she dies before she's trapped again. her entire life is focused on finding her limits so she can pass them, she will not be in a cage no matter how bid it is.
Relationships: Family: She had a family, but she never knew them because she was trapped in a room and her parents were treated like royalty, they never thought about visiting their daughter. After leaving and joining the pirates, Iris adopted Katherine in a way, but never admits it until Katherine leaves with Skarlet Friends: Katherine is friends with everyone on the ships and a major flirt with people on land which drives the crew insane because she can steal any girl or boy right from under them. She instantly like Ryker because he punches a city guard before she can and rescues a little girl. The beasts and Skarlet take her some time to warm up to, but when she does she is scarily protective of them. Love Interest: Anyone with a human face, but her main interest in the series is with Hestia who they meet in the next book.
