Iris VanDam

Iris VanDam is one of the most notorious pirates in the Meerare Sea (the sea next to Glatkori). Her origins are unknown and no one knows where she comes from, but they know her purpose. Ever since she appeared, her only goal is to free Glatkori from the Duke's reign.    Her origins are a simple one. She was the daughter of the most skilled blacksmith in Glatkori. When she was too young to remember her father, he was forced to work for the Duke. He was forced to leave his home and his family which forced his wife and oldest children to work in order to live. Iris watched her mother spiral into despair as he older brother ran away. One day her oldest sister disappeared after going to get a new job. Iris knew she wouldn't walk away from their family so she began to search for her.
She began poking her nose into places she shouldn't have, at an age too young for people to believe she was a threat. As she grew up, she learned more of the horrors of the nobility. She began to plot and steal from people who were destroying the city and a group slowly began to grow around her until she had enough money and a large enough group to build a ship.    During her search, she met the crown princess of Pacellum, Princess Moira, and the two became close friends. Iris took three years out of her own search to help the princess in claiming her crown from her uncle. During this period of time, she learned many things about the kingdom's history as well as becoming well versed in politics and law. This knowledge has helped her avoid being captured as a pirate once she returned which is where her infamy comes from. She is the most known pirate and easiest to find, but no one can tie her down.   After that, she continued to grow her forces while continuing to try and figure out what happened to her sister. Her entire life was spent trying to uncover the secrets of the city. After years and years of searching, she found a document that told her exactly what happened to her sister. She was sold. The Duke of Glatkori had been selling women to foreign countries for profit. She makes a pledge on that day that she will retire as a pirate when she has cleaned the city's streets with the blood of the Duke and all nobles involved.
She slowly begins to dismantle the city's politics but about 17 years before the start of the story, she is chased away in order to avoid being capture. She sails away to Usmor and attempts to rebuild her forces. During her 3 year stay of becoming a true pirate, she meets a young woman with wings and takes her in (this character is important, will expand on this point later on)   After those three years, she continues to explore the seas, trying to find out more of the Duke's crime and returns to the city five years before the start of the story to continue her fight against the city.
