Beau Garlin

A teenage boy rescued from a raided campsite just off the road to the hunting lodge, which the group brought back to Fortune's Point. Beau is from a town called Swampton, which was from one of the very first missions.   All of Beau's family was killed in the bandit raid on their campsite:
  • Caroline (mother)
  • Bradshaw (father)
  • Ellie (younger sister)
Gripping their staff in both hands, Aevelin waves it at the swathe of tall grass in front of them.
"We hear crying by a dead campfire that you are close to. Please tell us. Who or what is making the crying noise?"
They crouch down on their heels and look at the grass expectantly, head cocked slightly, waiting for an answer from the grass.
The grass quivers to life and begins to whisper in reply:
"Bandits attacked a small group of travelers--our roots are now stained with their blood. They killed most of them, thought they killed them all--we thought all were dead, too--and they stole all of their things. One of them clings to life, however, and has just discovered its brethren slain. It keens for them, and howls from its wounds."
"Well--I'm from the Forlorn Dredges...a village called Swampton. I'm pretty sure it used to be called Swamp Town but the locals just started slurring the name..."   He sees the horse attached to the cart and gives it a pat on the muzzle, not realizing it's a wildshaped dwarf.   "A while back--a few months ago, now--we had a zombie problem in the nearby swamp. We received aid from Fortune's Point; from the sorceress Toz, the warlock Bravo, the witch Blythe, and the ranger Bow. Their heroism sparked a dream in my sis..."   His voice cracks with a sudden sob, and he has to pause to recollect himself.   "...in my sister, Ellie. She wanted to be a great adventurer and help people, too. She started doing odd jobs around Swampton, helping anybody she saw needed it. My parents..." he trails off for a moment, then re-focuses, "...they realized that she could have a brighter future--that we both could--and they decided that we should move to Fortune's Point. So we packed up what little belongings we had, and..."   He swallows hard.   "...bandits came upon us as the sun rose this morning," he continues, tightening Aevelin's cloak around him. "They cut us down where we stood, and then they raided our pockets as the light faded from our eyes. The last thing I saw was them riding off with our horses. It felt like I was dying. I thought I was dead. When I woke up, I wished desperate that I was."
