Weltenburg Abby

Seeking out and acquiring ancient texts and relics to study often required a certain amount of force in addition to finesse. So hidden deep under the libraries was an extensive training facility where the monks would practice their fighting arts. In addition to force and finesse acquiring the relics also required goodly sums of money. This the monks earned by supplying local underground – unlicensed – taverns. For these monks were brewers and in a seemingly forgotten building next to the library was a brewery.

History

The year is 537. It’s been over 250 years since the closing of The Gates and it is a time of discovery and rebuilding. But there are mysterious signs in the skies and passing whispers of forgotten magic.   Nestled in the foothills of the Vinitian Mountains on the River Oilimpia a group of monks gather and plans for The Weltenburg Abbey begin to take shape. Its purpose will be to gather information. To seek out the rumors and tales. To collect and study artifacts of a time gone by.   But also to train. For seeking out these things is not always a peaceful mission. And so built into an underground cavern, eroded by years of water flow, is a large but simple training ground where the monks train in the movement and hand to hand combat - the way of ki.   In a fortuitous happenstance, it is learned that the crystal waters of the River Oilimpia are not only good for bathing but for brewing. For as all master brewers know – it’s the water. The monks dabble in brewing to shorten the long nights until one day another remarkable thing happens – the nearby town of Torma, in a fit of puritanism, bans the sale of alcoholic beverages. Ever resourceful, the monks begin sneaking barrels of their mead on the boats into town. Business prop up. Guards are bribed. Never greedy and always methodical, soon another regular source of funding for seeking out knowledge and artifacts is established.   The years pass and the prestige and renown of the Abbey grows. It is only natural when the The Arcane Citadel is formed in Torma in 971 that Weltenburg became a favored place for the wizards to visit to study the accumulated relics and discuss the meaning of the writings. Most of them at least, for all organizations must have their secrets.
