Open Lord

The Open Lords are the leaders of each great city on the Storm Coast. To put it simply, Open Lords are noblemen, and women, elected by the general public to be the lord in charge of the fiefdom they were elected at.

Qualifications

Be from a noble house, have blessings from the major guilds in the city you seek to become a lord in and have the blessings of the people.

Requirements

Be born of a noble house, can not be adopted into a noble house, and usually must be the descendant of an Open Lord.

Appointment

A festival is held for an open lord, usually the week of obtaining the position, where the noble is raised to the rank of Lord.

Duties

They designate when festivals are to take place, boost the morale of the people, give speeches and generally take care of the fiefdom they inherit.

Responsibilities

They are to manage the garrison of their fiefdom, control the taxes in and out of the city, and set patrols to protect the roads.

Benefits

Open Lords have full access to the cities treasury, garrison, as well as being able to give orders to all subordinates as well as the citizens of the Lords Alliance.

Accoutrements & Equipment

Cloak of the Lords Alliance. This is bestowed upon the Open Lord during the crowning festival, it is the Lord's seat of power(similar to a king's throne).

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

The procedure of removing a Lord from power depends on what happens. If the Lord is shamed by defeat, then they must step down or be beheaded. If the Lord is voted from his seat of power by having the grace of the people revoked from him, then he is to be publically shamed. If the Open Lord steps down from his seat of power, then he strips him/herself of the Cloak of the Lord's Alliance and is allowed to live a life free of his/her political affiliations.

The Lords Alliance was formed around the year 1325 DR (Dragon Reign)

Status

The title once had power of the lands ruled by the Lords alliance. Now it is merely a puppets seat to be controlled by the guilds. the Guilds who control the market, where the ores and minerals flow to, and who receives training in the ways of the arcane.

Creation

The Lords Alliance was created by Lord Piergeiron of Waterdeep to bring the great cities on the Storm Coast together to hold fast against the forces that seek to destroy us.

Source of Authority

An Open Lord must obtain the blessings of the common people to become a lord.

Length of Term

Position is held until either they are voted out or they resign. In the case of a Open Lords early death, a special council is held by the Lord's closest advisers to decide who is to become temporary Lord until an election can be held.
