Third Lobe Technologies

Developed by the Tau Ceti Grid, Third Lobe technologies are tools that act as an artificial extension of the user's brain or nervous system. The human brain , through neuroplasticity, is extrmely adapable and will grow or change to respond to damage or major alterations to either itself or the body at large. Third Lobe technologies take advantage of this by giving the brain an opportunity to adapt to the presence of a tool as if it were a part of the body, interfacing with the brain's functions and thus weaving itself subtly into the user's conscious or unconcious.
Third Lobe technologies include mind/machine interfaces for controlling machines like Havoc Suits and Hardsuits, but more commonly they are used for operative skill modules. Essentially, while connected to the Third Lobe your brain can 'remember' knowledge and skills you were never actually taught. It should be said that practice and training on top of this is still generally required, as while you can remember the information it takes hands-on practice to establish 'muscle memory' and grow pathways in your own brain so that the contents of the Third Lobe are easily accessible.
Lambda Modules are different. Where an Operative Skill is just information in your head, a Lambda module can process stimuli and make decisions, feeding the output back into your head indistinguishable from your own unconscious. While this crosses a line that many people are not comfortable with, it is indispensible in situations where time is of the essence. Military use of Lambda modules for aim correction and tactical analysis has proven extremely effective, and soldiers with these so-called 'Battleminds' have a nearly insurmountable advantage over those without them.
While Lamda modules and most older Third Lobe technologies require a surgically implant port known as a Spinal Bridge, more modern Third Lobe techs used for civilian purposes can be used simply by wearing a kind of electronic collar or helmet with no surgical preparation needed.
