Psy

I popped the glove compartment open and out flew what looked like a small black housefly.
"You keep a fly in your glove compartment?" Tim asked. He barely seemed surprised, just mildly amused. I was impressed with how quickly he acclimated to my crazy world.
"It's not a fly, it's a Psy" I said.
The small Psy landed in my opened hand. It buzzed a little and I recited the incantation to link us. A yellow-green light lit up my palm and the Psy buzzed with delight. It flew off my hand and out the window, but the light on my hand stayed lit up. We heard the buzzing of the Psy as it flew toward the sheriff. He stood by the hole in the wall and talked with a deputy. As the Psy flew closer to them, the light started to transmit their words for us to hear. Tim and I leaned into the light to listen in on the conversation.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Psy looks like an average housefly at first glance, but closer inspection shows distinct differences. First, the body is fuzzy, much like a bumblebee. The fur is a grey-black color with no other characteristics. The body is not segmented like an insect's but one whole piece. There are two sets of wings on its back that enable it to fly. The forewing is larger than the hindwing. The wings are translucent. The face is flat without a mouth or nose. There are also no antennas or other appendages coming from the head. Their ears are small and hidden in their fur. The eyes are large and take up much of the face. It is a compound eye allowing it to see in multiple directions. There are six legs. The forelegs are shorter than the other legs and feature three toes on the foot for grasping. The middle legs and hind legs are similar sized and feature two-toed claws on each foot. The Psy has been observed grasping various things and moving it around its eyes to inspect them.

Biological Traits

It is impossible to tell Psy apart from one another unless it is befriended by a magic-user.

Ecology and Habitats

While it is unknown how they live when in the Veiled Realms, here in the Mortal Realm they make their home is unlikely places. When befriended by a magic-user, they will find a dark place in the magic-user's residence. Places include cupboards, drawers, trunks of cars and the like. When alone in the Mortal Realm, they are often found in caves, dark forests, or abandoned buildings.

Dietary Needs and Habits

It is unknown what the Psy eats as it does not have a mouth. It is believed to live on some form of magic-energy, perhaps it returns to the Veiled Realms to feed. There are times when befriended Psy disappear only to return a few days later. During this absence, it is believed they return to the Veiled Realms to feed or do whatever else they need to.

Additional Information

Domestication

Despite the ability to befriend this species, it is still considered Wild

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Natural Habitat is the Veiled Realms. While in the Mortal Realm they can be found nearly anywhere there is a dark corner to hide in.

Average Intelligence

Very intelligent, capable of problem solving and rational thought

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The magical and psychic powers of the Psy are impressive. The Psy can view the Veiled Realm that overlays the Mortal Realm, allowing them to see ghosts and other spectres. A magic-user can befriend one of these creatures and augment their own powers with them depending on the magic-users elemental affinity. Currently, the only magic-users that have been able to do this are those with the Wild or Spirit affinities.
Wild Magic-users: can use the Psy for spying or reconnaissance. When linked with a Wild magic-user, the magic-user can hear through the Psy's link in real time or record and 'playback' audio-visual memories.
Spirit Magic-Users: can use the Psy to help disperse particularly violent ghosts and help map out leylines, Wild Ways, and portals to the Veiled Realm.

Civilization and Culture

History

When first encountered, magic-users did not realize how smart they were and experimented on them. However, once magic-users learned to befriend them, a partnership formed. It is not entirely understood what Psy receive from the partnership with magic-users other than a designated place to stay while in the Mortal Realm. They seem to enjoy exploring and working with the magic-user. It is observed that they communicate using their wings and various vibration patterns.
