Dragon's Wit

Dragon's Wit is a card game that is easy to pick up and play and requires very few components. As such, it is a popular game to play at pubs or taverns.

History

The origins of Dragon's Wit can be traced to the First Age of Dragon's, where slaves and prisoners would play the game using whatever scraps they could get their hands on. The game was originally intended to be a way to keep spirits high during these times, as the point of the game is to outwit the 'Dragon' player.   Even after the dragons were overthrown during the Age of Fire, Dragon's Wit was played commonly as a pastime activity, and solidified itself in the culture of Olora.

Execution

Dragon's Wit needs at least three players to start and most agree the game plays the best with five players. Each player rolls a set of dice with the highest roller being the 'Dragon' for the game. The other players are the 'Prisoners,' 'Commoners,' or 'Slaves,' depending on the variance of terms used from region to region.   Each Prisoner starts with three cards and the Dragon starts with five. The Dragon starts and play moves around the table, with each Prisoner discarding a card from their hand to the 'Dragon's Hoard' and then drawing a card at the end of their turn.   On the Dragon's turn, they can draw the top card from the Hoard, the deck, or can take a card from a Prisoner. The Prisoner's goals are to get a matching set of two cards in order to get out of the game, called 'Escaping.' The Dragon's goal is to eliminate all Prisoners (by taking all their cards) or by matching four sets of four cards.   Additional rules:
  • If a Prisoner starts their turn with one card, they can choose to give that card to another player and choose to lose the game instead. This is called a 'Sacrifice' play.
  • The Dragon can choose to shuffle the Hoard into the deck on their turn.
  • The Dragon can only lay down one match on each of their turns.
  •   Dragon's Wit has multiple variants across Olora and there is even a competitive league for the game in Aldastraza.

    Components and tools

A set of dice and a deck of cards. The dice is unnecessary if another method to choose the 'Dragon' player is decided upon.
