Okoto Nui

(The following world is for a re-imagining of Bionicle. It starts from scratch, revamping existing concepts from both G1 and G2, as well as entirely new ones; and it focuses on developing cultural and geographical factors neither generation deeply explored or factored in.)   "Gathered friends, listen again to our legend of the Bionicle."   So begins all stories told by the Matoran, inhabitants of the continent of Okoto Nui. In ancient times, the god Mata Nui, whose name means "Great Visage," formed the world and seven lesser gods, called Kaita, to govern it and its inhabitants. One of them--the Makuta--betrayed his father and attempted a forceful conquest of the planet. In response, Mata Nui created great warriors called Toa to battle him. At the culmination of the battle, both creator and rebel were sent into a deep slumber, and the world has been in a constant state of change ever since.   The Toa have long left this world, and in the generations since, the Matoran have organized themselves into 12 city-states across their homeland. Each Matoran belongs to one of 12 races linked to a primordial element which comprises the universe, and each element is defined by the type of mana, or spiritual energy, which exists in all matter and energy.   Legend holds that, one day, the Toa will be needed again. Despite this, the Matoran have gradually begun to lose faith in long-gone heroes and great beings above and beyond the physical universe. Destiny is a funny thing, though. Fate can change, the tide of battle can turn, and the fate of whole empires can be decided in the blink of an eye. The only way to persevere through such dire change is to maintain unity against all boundaries, to follow duty do matter the challenge, and to hold fast to control over destiny.   That is the way of the Bionicle.
