Session 14

General Summary

We proceed to the shoreline to inspect the boat and find Tronus unconscious on the beach. Thormyr is able to waken him. He's largely unharmed, though without much memory since he disappeared, save for a feeling of being strangled in the dark.   There is are two small boats tied to a rock nearby. Sir Ryland says they made a makeshift boat to try and reach the island. They were able to successfully reach the island. They lost the first member of their party constructing the boat; the wailing anguish of the trees as they cut one down drove him mad, and he drowned himself in the sea.   I ask Sir Ryland what happened when they went to the island, and he says he thinks the island prepared itself for them. He escaped, technically, though they treat him as one of theirs because of what he incubates for them.   We return to the cave to take our rest. Travius takes the first watch.   In the morning we awake after a troubled sleep, some of us having worse of it than others. We board the boats and embark, leaving Sir Ryland on the shore. He tells us he can't bear to see his love again.   The boats leak and are only vaguely seaworthy. The air a couple hundred feet beyond us shimmers and obscures our vision of the distance. The water seems to have a faint bioluminescence in its depths.   The pyramid pulses. I resist its effect, but Thormyr is rendered unconscious and slumps against my back. In the other boat, Norric, Dominique, Maar, and Tronus pass out, dropping their oars in the water. I use Mage Hand to retrieve them. Travius pulls us close to their boat.   I spot a wave coming to our boat. Thormyr, Maar, Norric, and Tronus awaken. We point the boats into the wave as it reaches us, and it is sizeable. I am nearly tossed from our vessel, but Travius snags me with his hook and keeps me in. Maar and the unconscious Dominique are tossed into the water. Tronus stays in the boat, lashed in place by Norric.   Maar struggles to swim with Dominique, so Travius jumps in and helps him bring her in. I am able to clamber back aboard our boat. We tie our boats together with a length of Norric's rope.   When we go to push off and resume our journey, our boats are held fast. Maar is still in the water, and something looms in the water behind him. It grabs his leg. The creature appears to be composed of water, with aquatic tentacles holding on to Maar.   I shift to the bow of the boat and cast Protection from Evil on Maar. He's able to escape it and climb aboard his boat.   Dominique fails to hit the monster with an Eldritch Blast. Travius also boards a boat and then casts Magic Missle against the elemental.   I sink a Melf's Acid Arrow deep into the creature, while Maar hits with his own savage attack.   The elemental disappears under the waves, and by the movement of the boat it appears to have gone under us. Maar tries to conceal our passage from its senses with magic, but moments later it attempts to upend with a great geyser of water. Several of us are knocked prone, though I stay standing. I respond to the monster's aggression with Magic Missle.   Thormyr casts Destroy Water on the elemental, finally causing it to flee.   We arrive at the island. The terrain is similar to the mainland. We take a short rest and I recover some of my spell capacity.   There is a walled structure in the distance, and it seems much like a building we'd see in our realm. The walls are stone, and there is a path leading up to their gate, which is open. The walls are a hundred feet across, and we are a similar distance away, downslope.   Dominique sends her owl familiar Snowfall to observe the fortress from the air. She observes a series of buildings identical to those from which we fled in the Prime Material.    While the owl is scouting, I cast a Detect Magic ritual and examine the items I have stored in the Bag of Holding. They are all magical. Since we are short on time, I ritually cast Identify on the cube. It is a Cube of Force. We give that to Thormyr and he attunes to it while I identify the remaining items.   We walk in the gate and move to the front door of the manor. The place is deserted, no signs of life (as Snowfall had observed.) Inside is similarly devoid of life, so we move to the chapel. In an adjacent room I observe a twisted figure walking around a room, reading a book. It is eyeless and tentacled, and wearing robes.   Maar envelopes the creature in Faerie Fire. Travius sets upon it with his sword and wounds it. Norric feathers it with an arrow. Tronus strikes it soundly. I cast Protection from Evil on Thormyr.    Travius smites the robed creature, felling him. In a connected room, two seated creatures, who are indulging in drink, rise upon seeing Tronus. These creatures have maws that unfold on either side of their visage like fanged petals. They have rubbery grey skin like catfish, and several long tentacles draped from their heads.   The razor-maw creatures move quickly to attack Travius, tearing into him with their petal-mouths and claws. Maar restores some of his vitality with a spell of healing from a distance. He then bounds into the room and strikes one of the razor maws with primal savagery. Travius strikes back with his sword, to good effect.   Norric puts an arrow into a razor maw, and Thormyr heals Travius. Dominique blasts a razor maw with an Eldritch Blast while Snowfall distracts it.   I step in front of the door to the chapel to get a shot at the wounded razor maw. My Fire Bolt misses, but I can feel a resonance from the other side of the door.   Despite a strong attack from Travius, the final razor maw still stands. It lets out an exceptionally loud shriek, piercing our ears. Tronus is stunned by the overwhelming sound. Dominique is able to drop the wounded razor maw with Eldritch Blast.   I empower a Magic Missle and hit the remaining razor maw with four darts. Travius slashes with his sword while Thormyr uses Sacred Flame. Tronus whiffs and I make a minor hit with Fire Bolt. Maar and Travius contribute successful attacks, bringing a screech from the razor maw. The glass windows shatter behind it. Tronus, Travius, and Thormyr are stunned.   Norric hits with his bow, and Dominique finishes it with her Eldritch Blast.
