Session 11

General Summary

Dominique uses her familiar to search the city, and finds Maar in the form of a dog. She leads the others of our party through the city. They encounter a cloaked figure along the way, but manage to hide and let them pass. They spot an insubstantial, shadowy figure following behind the cloaked person. It appears to be a shadow demon, like the one we encountered before. After the figured pass, a scream can be heard, that cuts off quickly.   The party is reunited, and Norric describes the manor in which he found an escape route. He’s concerned about how safe it is. It is close to the wall.   We rest up.

Morning

We scout the manor and find the hobgoblins are thick on the city walls, and the devil bats swarm overhead. We are concerned that the hobgoblins on the walls could see us enter the manor grounds if we enter during the day. We’ve never seen so many devil bats active in the city. They are thick around the central citadel.   There is a religious rune of Iuz on the manor ground gates, and in goblin there is written a warning of danger within. I ritually cast Detect Magic and find the gate has abjuration magic.   We return to our hideout and rest until night, when we return and climb the wall to the compound at the far side from the city wall. We scale the wall and sneak to the back of the manor. As Norric and Dominique pick the lock on the back door, I notice Thomas staring into the nearby windows. There’s a purple glow coming from within. I warn the others.   Dominique steps in the room and finds three corpses seated at a table. Two of them (two women) have their throats slit, the male has his wrists slit. This appears to be a servant’s quarters. They appear to have died a couple of years ago.   There’s a purple glow from the room adjacent to this one, visible through the windows.   We are attacked by a monster who appears to be masses of clawed tentacles and another that is a grell. Some spindly monstrosity crawls from the sink, grinning a lipless, fanged grin, as it clouds our thoughts with a miasma of hopelessness.   Tronus is hit heavily by a mass of tentacles, but is healed by Thomir. Norric shoots the mass of tentacles with his bow. We fight gamely, but another of the spindly creatures emerges from the sink. Norric is bitten by one of the spindly creatures, while Maar, in wolf form, is paralyzed by the grell’s poison and grappled in its tentacles.   Thomir restores Maar to remove the poison that paralyzes him, The tentacle creature retreats into shadow.   I kill a squealer with a Fire Bolt. Travius stands in the puddle it leaves to attack the grell, and feels the liquid is scorching hot. He moves before being burned and hits the grell. The remaining squealer begins to rip into his breastplate and tries to burrow into his chest.   The grell is killed. There are more grell floating outside the house. I’m able to hit the squealer burrowing into Travius with a Fire Bolt, killing it. Its liquified corpse burns him under his armor.   We shut the outside door against the floating grell, while Norric pics the locks on the pantry and cold storage. There’s a preserved corpse in the cold storage. Tronus inspects it to find that its face has been removed and its brain removed. He looks up to see a hole in the roof. Norric searches the room and finds nothing else of note.   We take a short, uneasy rest in this room. Norric locks the ice chamber with the key he found. I keep an eye on the sink and hear noises from down the hole.
