Naut

Able to trace their origin to true giant-kin, Nauts stood towering over humans and most other humanoids. Their skin had taken on characteristics of aquatic beasts, and their hair was wild and unruly, in shades of red, green and black. Their faces had harsh lines and almost appeared to be carved in mossy stone. When they spoke, a sense of thunder could be felt, and rows of shark-like teeth could be seen in place of normal humanoid teeth. Many Nauts hosted a variety of sea shells, aquatic critters or the like on their body, which could be off-setting for other folks, albeit being completely normal to a Naut.   The sheer strength of a Naut made them feared warriors, and their affinity for aquatic life made them excellent raiders and sailors. They could be found in all coastal lands of the Homelands, though they were historically tied to the The Stormlands, Angwith and the Kentick Isles. In ages past, the Naut would raid coastal communities and establish footholds there to enable them to craft weapons and armor of metals - a process that was nigh-impossible under the waves where they originally came from. In later times, the Nauts formed mutually beneficial alliances with the empires of old, exchanging their excellent tactical skills in return for refined artistry and other goods that the surfacers had an easier time to acquire than the aquatic races.

Blood of the Deep

The Nauts were able to reproduce with humanoids, though such pairings would usually result in horrible offspring known as Draugr. These hellish creatures would take on the worst traits from their giant parent, becoming an unruly and vicious creature that grew to adulthood in a matter of few years before becoming lost in its blood frenzy. Being true giant-kin, Nauts were also unaffected by spells and other effects that usually worked only on humanoids.   The bloodlust of the Nauts were a thing of legend, but not necessarily something that all Naut succumbed to. Nauts had a strong tie to their family and their elder, whom were looked after and taken care of. A pairing of Nauts were often a result of years of friendly competition, to ensure that ones mate were physically and mentally a match for each other. During pregnancy, Naut women were restrained to life under the waves, and certain types of underwater food and nutrition, which played a key role in Naut society, as this biological limitation made it hard for them to establish lasting communities on the surface. Once the woman gave birth, either the father or the mother had to remain under the waves to look after the child. The choice would usually fall on the partner that had proven, through time, to be the lesser warrior of the two.
