A divine sacrifice to end the madness

After discovering the source of the madness in the world (Ömys), the Divine Faces combine their strength to overthrow the Threaded Prince. Even though the majority of his supplicants weren't devout by free will, their forced worship was still enough to bring Ömys to a level of power unrivaled by the other Faces. Wave after wave, he repelled them. Finally, the Faces realized that the only surefire way to break through the mental veil of Ömys was to infiltrate his mind like he had done to so many. In unison, the Faces plunged into the Prince's mind, imposing their psyches into his own, causing immeasurable pain and breaking his mental strength. Ömys becomes the Plague of Madness, shifting his spheres to sanity, manipulation, and illusion. There is another side-effect; the other Faces become lodged in Ömys' body, creating a single deity with nine revolving visages. Forcing such an intense divine presence into a concentrated area also caused the other Faces to Shatter, and fragments of their identities plummeted to the land below. These are called the Shattered Fragments.
