People of Nonvyrox

The people of Nonvyrox are a diverse collection of different types of people from a variety of different physiological and socio-cultural backgrounds. However, in this article, I want to focus on the ancestries of the world. That is, the biological differences in people as they are born into the world, some may call them species. The reason I use ancestry is that each individual has their origins, the place in which they are raised and then people have the biological factors that help grant them some specific abilities that differentiate them from others of a different ancestry. Just because you are born connected to a group with common features, it doesn't mean that you align culturally with all of these people.   This article also hopes to be an overview of the ancestries that appear within Nonvyrox, it won't dive into the minutia of different subsets of ancestries, instead focusing on the whole collective as one entity. Therefore, Elves will be contained as one whole rather than dividing between the High Elves, Light Elves, Sea Elves, and more (there's so many elves!).   Nonvyrox started off as a setting based on Dungeons and Dragons, however, to reduce the innate link to this system, I will strive to use the Nonvyrox system agnostic name for many of the different ancestries.

Commonfolk

This section contains information about the ancestries that are most common within the realms. Usually appearing in most population centres.

Human

By far the most recognisable of the different ancestries, humans are extremely dense in terms of population among the worlds of Nonvyrox, they seem to have stemmed from some combination of all of the ancient peoples of the world. As a result, they are very diverse and adaptable throguhout the world, showing a resilience in their very nature, adapting to change as needed. There are many different cultures of humans that drastically change their cultural knowledge and sentiments.

Dwarves

Originating from the many mountain ranges, dwarves are stocky individuals who has to adapt to survive among small tunnels and mountain homes. However, after a time, they expanded and explored across the world, with some living their lives more among the hills of a city than the stone of a mountain. Yet no matter where they go, dwarves are known for their hearty resistance and ability to commune with stonework. Often they can be found acting as builders, architects, and craftspeople across the realm, a call from their patron god, Djanrol.

Elves

One of the most diverse and long-lived races, some humans talk about Elves as if they see themselves as better than them in all regards. This is only half the truth. Elves began as intrinsically linked to the Fae Lands, their presence brought forth by Yldrivon during The Dawning. While some remained in the Fae Lands, others came into the world and lived among the woods. Despite this, splinters and fractures among divine beliefs led to an extremtly vast numer of elves across the realm, each stemming their origins back to one of the foudning elves that broke away from the original wood elves of the realm.

Grassfolk

Named for their shorter stature, Grassfolk are humanoids that it is said "only just grow above the height of tall grass". These people have a wonderlust in their soul, adventure in their heart. Yet, some once they satisfy that desire settle down for the several centuries of their life to continue adventures in a different more calm manner. They are known for their cunning and have been blessed by Uvalian to be filled with good luck, for better or worse.

Gnomes

Crafty, both in intellect and with their hands. Gnomes are long-lived inventors that stand not much taller than a member of the Grassfolk. Having branched off from the Grassfolk at some point, Gnomes became empowered by the forces of the world after communing with the materials of the world. As a result, the Gnomish people's lives extended and they became attuned to a single material that they use as their canvas when crafting. However, this long life has a cost, gnomes are known to transition between different stages of existence, forming different view points and goals as they trek the realm for centuries.

Giantkin

Descended from the powerful creatures that ruled the realm, the Giantkin have a strong connection with the might of their larger ancestors. Often Giantkin stand taller than any other creature in a room, with features remaniscent of their giant heritage. Most giantkin started as a collection of herds, children of these ancient giants that had shrunk but retained supernatural boons linking them directly to powerful ancient magic. However, over time, Giantkin have intergrated themselves into modern culture, with a few cities containing large populations of Giantkin alongside other ancestries.

Fiendling

A strange vision in the realm of Nonvyrox, Fiendlings are creatures who have a link to devilish, demonic, or other powerful planes from the lower rungs of Planar Cosmology. This sometimes has led to mistrust of Fiendlings, or their persecution within various parts of the realm. However, it is more standard to see Fiendlings as a vision of history not of the person in front of them. Some say that the patron deity of Fiendlings is Disaki, however, this seems not to be the case for all Fiendlings as many of them seem to have links to other powerful fiends of the realm.

God-Touched

Similar to a Fiendling, God-Touched are humanoids who have the influence of the planes of the realm. However, usually this is from the upper realms, or even the divine planes. Usually, a God-Touched is connected to one of the many deities of the realm, yet they can also be empowered by any form of belief system. The God-Touched find themselves more linked to the powers of a divine protector or warrior, though some of them have a corrupted or impure connection with their believed power, which can lead to them becoming fallen and their power oozing fear and necrosis.

Drakin

Linked to the ancient dragons of the world, Drakin are humanoids who resemble the dragon that they hail from. All of them have a draconic looking heads that match the scales that adorn their frame. However, its the colouration of the scales that is the most unique element of their existence, they line up with the dragon whose ancestry the drakin originate from. This also empowers them to launch a blast of elemental energy from their mouth in the same vein as their ancestor.

Orc

A historical ancestry, Orcs were once the servants of the god Disaki, part of his legion of warriors alongside devils. However, when The Parting occurred and devils were returned to the Infernal Planes, ancient Orcs remained on the material plane with no guidance. As a result they had to live and survive their ways across the realms. In doing so, they discovered more about the natural world and a split occurred between Orcs who were drawn to the natural world and those who wished to settle down with other ancestries. This split led to a diversification of Orcish culture among the other ancestries and across the different continents.

Catar

The most common version of the Agatin, the Catar often resemble a lynx or wildcat but with the proportions of a humanoid. As a result, they have learned to live among the other ancestries. Catar are known for their ability to climb different regions with ease, but also their charming and calming personality. Many Catar live among other humanoid races with ease, finding it peaceful and restful. However, there are a number of Catar who feel an urge to run around and adventure with a strong sense of pride. The Catar with the urge to run around find that they are able to run like the wind when the moment strikes them, almost as if they were striking at prey.

Goblin

The most common of the Goblinkin, the early Goblins served under several powerful Fae. During The Shatter, Pundras took control of many Goblins. All of them lost their history and several developed oval-like heads, whilst others kept their humanoid face, though each Goblin’s teeth expanded to be sharp points. While most Goblinkin search for their own history and look towards returning to the Fae Lands. Goblins have two prominent sects, those who still live under the curse that Pundras placed upon them and those who are searching to make their own destiny.

Rare folk

This section contains more about some of the more unique and diverse ancestries within Nonvyrox. While they appear in several populations, they are often more diverse and uncommon overall. Though this does not mean that there aren't plenty of them around the realm. This section is very diverse in the various types of ancestries covered, some are more prominent than others, but all exist within the realm.

Elementra

There are many ways by which the Elementra come about, some are linked to the ancient dealings between ancestors and the elementals of the Inner Foci. However, there are many other methods by which someone could be transformed into an Elementra. There are rumours throughout the realm that in the case of powerful natural events, children born within the proximity of the disaster are granted the abilities of an Elementra linked to the disaster. Many Elementra exist in the realm as outsiders due to the volatility of their powers. However, many find themselves called to the power of the Ossaman Tribes, who have strong links between the Material realm and the Inner Foci.

Firbolg

Creatures that originate from the Fae Lands, Firbolg are giant humanoids, standing almost as tall as their Material Plane counterparts, Giantkin. Firbolg are devout creatures, with those who have migrated to the Material Plane being linked to several of the gods. Often Firbolgs are loyal for their life to their faith and possess an innate wisdom that arises from their origins. Often Firbolg are found in places linked with either their god or nature as many of them follow Mandra, their divine mother of nature.

Automaton

A relatively recent addition to the realm of Nonvyrox, Automatons are able to be traced back to the origins of the world, and particularly during the Age of Creation. They are a colleciton of sentient constructs that through one of several means, can think and feel for themselves. Each of the three types of Automata that have been found so far each run on a different power source, which alters their physiology and their purpose. Ranging from divine potential through to blood itself, Automata are a strange sight for most of the world, but many places have adapted to their design and utility, though some are still taking their time to see them as more than machines.

Avaris

Large bird-like humanoids, Avaris resemble birds in their looks but have the same intelligence as other people. Avaris typically look like birds of prey. They were once a large collection of people within the world of Nonvyrox, however during The Shatter, the majority of their population were cut down by several large disasters. Some claim that they were transformed into other mortals, or their feathers were plucked and they became strange demonic creatures. In the modern day, its unclear how many families of Avaris managed to survive, as a result, its very rare to find members of the Avaris across the world.

Pantera

The other form of Agatin, Pantera also resemble a feline creature, though usually this is bigger cats like lions, tigers, and panthers. Unlike the sleek frame of Catari, Pantera stand several heads taller and have a bulkier frame that allows them to leap and pounce upon their enemies rather than skulk around. Most Pantera reside in the Aonis Wilds, their culture having adapted to the jungles that fill this region, giving them a stronger chance of survival. Unlike others, many Pantera have rejected living in the great civilization that seems to be formed by most of Nonvyrox. As a result, Pantera can often be found in packs running wild in the jungles and beyond, forming their own kind of civilization.

Terrapin

An ancestry of many mysteries, Terrapin have been a long-standing group of adventurers and wise sages. They integrated themselves directly into the populus as soon after The Shatter as they could. However, this does not mean that they are treated as kindly in return. One strong collection of Terrapin used to live in what is now Xhen-dra, their people slaughtered by the city's founder. It is said that as a result, most Terrapin try to experience as much of the world as they can in an aim to not miss out on anything. While this sentiment stemmed from fear, the Terrapin have taken it as a calling to do more all the time.

Fawn

Hailing from the Fae Lands, the Fawn are linked directly to the idea of foolishness but kindness. The Fawn typically still live within the Fae Lands, but there are times when they are sent through into the Material Plane by Archfae. Though sometimes, a Fawn can be led foolishly to fall through a portal into the Material Plane. No matter how they arrive, Fawns are typically kind and welcoming individuals closely linked to nature and the world around them. Fawns have the hind-legs of some kind of goat, these let the Fawn leap further and higher than most other people.

Changeling

Changelings are a strange ancestry, they don't have a single discerning physical feature. This is because they can change their face and visage at will, allowing them to look like any individual they wish. Many Changelings either originate from the Fae Lands, with their forms being altered directly by the will of the Changeling. As a result of their Fae nature, some changelings are known to be cunning, whilst others are more insightful, learning more about the person they wish to become. Most Changelings adapt a number of Personas, forms that they take. As a result, it is quite uncommon to see a Changeling in their true form unless they wish to show it.

Eladrin

Linked directly with the Fae, Eladrin stem from the group of Elves that never touched the Material Plane. They are known to usually align with one of the Seasonal Courts of the Fae Lands, taking on features of that court when they do. However, there are some Eladrin who are more free flowing, flitting between the seasons with no rhyme or reason, just changing with the whim of the wind. On the Material Plane, its not uncommon for an Eladrin to be mistaken for a type of Elf. Therefore, many Eladrin wear outfits that align with their season, to accentuate the additional Fae nature of their form. They can often be distinguished by their longer points to their ears and their lack of knowledge surrounding mortal customs.

Drothgora

Some have written that the Drothgora are just animated collections of boulders and rocks. Despite this narrow-minded thought they are completely sentient creatures. The Drothgora spend most of their time within the ancient mountains within Vilura, accustomed to the cold and wild winds of the snow filled peaks. While many of the people of the world are unaware of the Drothgora, due to their rarity and sometimes isolationist nature, within the violent and thrusting north of Vilura there are several small towns that have a close relationship with a few Drothgora who act as protectors for the people, sharing their resources, but becoming a fierce warrior and spell slinger when needed.

Morgalis appear to look a typical penguin but records have shown they possess a stronger intellect and are completely sentient. Most Morgalis have some form of innate connection to their homeland, which helps grant them some form of innate magic that seems to have grown from the magic that flows through their arctic homelands. While rare in the southern lands, a large collection of Morgalis gathered up their magic and understood that they could create a society based around the magic they possessed. This mageochracy has started to develop, sending envoys out into the world, and producing adventurers that brave all kinds of danger.

Nayhaseen

While there are many rumors as to what helped the Nayhaseen to grow, nothing definitive has ever been discovered. Yet, somehow, the Nayhaseen appeared in the south of the Daunka Province in late 690 AR. Over this time, the main tribe of Nayhaseen built relations with the Province and have started to set out further into the world. The Nayhaseen have deep grey skin and long thick hair that they can control as if it were another limb. These strange features, along with their fervent worship of Tral'Vokar have led some people to believe that they are chosen by him to become part of his plans for the dreaming.

Lycankind

Across the realms, there are many different types of creatures who have been affected by the affliction of Lycanthropy. However, the Lycankind have developed a minor form of Lycanthropy that allows them to choose when they change. The Lycankind can take on animalistic features and become more like their greatly afflicted kin, however they are unable to fully change into a full animal shape, only taking on the additional aspects. They way that each Lycankind is affects is unique to them, with each member of the ancestry finding that their form is altered differently depending on the animalistic forms that they take on. Some powerful members of the Ossaman Tribes have found themselves transformed into a Lycankind who can taken on the forms of their draconic patron.

Ninoxia

Ninoxia are a bird-like ancestry that seem to stem from the same ancient people as the Avaris. However, instead of following alongside with larger birds of prey, the Ninoxia eventually developed to be similar to owls. Instead of developing large talons, the Ninoxia have become silent stalkers, able to silently fly in the night and becoming more swift in their actions. Typically a Ninoxia is known to be quite wise, though this is typically a generalisation. The Ninoxia are more prevelant in the world than the Avaris, having hidden more adeptly, but mostly because a flock of Ninoxia hid through The Shatter by waiting it out in the Fae Lands, keeping them alive as many died.

Korvus

The last of the avain races, the Korvus is the most tragic. Most of them resemble a raven, but they can also resemble many other birds that bark back what they can hear. Once a very fluent ancestry, it is said that in the days of The Shatter one of their kind tried to bargin with Thoura, and in doing so became immensely bragadocious about the might of the Korvus being the only way to win the war. As a result, Thoura placed an everlasting curse on all Korvus that they can only speak back words that they have heard. However, this curse has had unintended consequences, with the Korvus becoming adept at duplicating the behaviours and skills of those around them.

Centaur

While from the waist up, Centaurs can resemble any humanoid. On the bottom half, the Centaur is completely in the shape of a horse, though again this could be the size of a small pony up to the size of a Drakehoof Horse. Centaurs usually hail from the Fae Lands, and as such have a more elven upper half. These forms of Centaurs are really attuned to nature and as a result are more proficient with natural skills. Centaurs also can see the Leylines that make up the world, purely because they are so in tune with the nature of a place. When a Centaur is form outside of the Fae Lands, its typically because of the result of a curse from a powerful witch or because a wizard transformed themselevs into a Centaur and became stuck in that form.

Fairy

Hailing from the Fae Lands, Fairies typically resemble small elves with some form of insectoid wings. Being innately infused with the strange magics of the Fae Lands, the Fairies often find themselves shifted by the various magics of the plane and as a result are often shifted to possess some form of unique characteristic that makes them unique. Fairies are often the agents of the Fae Courts, leading them to often be sent to the Material Plane on the orders of their Archfae. Despite this, there are some Fairies who act upon their own accords, and some who stumble through a crossing into the Material Realm. In these cases, the Fairy typically find themselves hiding from the rest of the world, afraid that they aren't hitting the societal norms that people are being clear about in the world.

These Lepusine had several litters, leading to a group of anthropomorphic rabbits starting to populate the world. Lepusine are often quick talkers, quick thinkers, and always quick footed. The origin of Minotaurs are continually contested, due to a lack of facts. Some believe that they were created by Uvalian to guide people through their sense of direction. Some say that Minotaurs were created by a powerful demon to patrol the massive labyrinths of their Demonic plane.

Lizardfolk

In the ancient days of the world, Mandra and Ilvyr worked together to create a group of people that are based on the snakes that Ilvyr coveted so much. As a result the Lizardfolk were created, born from the snakes and other reptiles of the world. The Lizardfolk were gifted with natural defenses and a proficiency for poisons by ilvyr, whom the Lizardfolk came to worship as their god. During The Shatter, the Lizardfolk aligned with and were empowered by Ilvyr, leading to many of them being slaughtered by the power of The Heraldic Gods throughout the war. Once Ilvyr abandoned them, leaving them alone on the realm, Lizardfolk scattered and split into many different sects worshipping different gods, both good and bad, to find a new purpose in this post-war world.

Telethra

Imbued with powers from another realm, Telethra seem to have been empowered by the power of Alvandis and her demigods, The Three Sisters. While the exact nature of their selection seems random, Telethra who have been empowered by the sisters find themselves psionically capable and in a strange relationship with an additional spirit possessing their form. The two combined share a powerful mind, with their abilities allowing them telepathic communication and resistance against psychic attacks. Some Telethra find themselves in a strange relationship with the idea of dreams, leading to them being a source of interest for Tral'Vokar, other Telethra find that they are able to move objects using only their mind. These two forms seem to be the only versions that have arisen just now in the few recorded cases of the Telethra, otherwise they appear to resemble a normal mortal, though its unclear if they still possess the powers of their original form.

Maktiya

The Maktiya are similar to the Firbolg in that they prefer to live in communes of nature, where they find themselves in a serene inner peace. Maktiya settlements are typically monastaries and religious temples to Mandra, their patron goddess. When they venture to bigger cities, some Maktiya use disguises to avoid questions, others are more upfront about their form and use it to expand their culture and mythos throughout the world. A number of Maktiya have recently started to enter society as a unique settlement in the Aonis Wilds, with one among them sitting in their parliament.

Hobgoblin

Sometimes considered the strongest of the Goblinkin, Hobgoblins were once the primary enforcers of the Fae Courts. Strong guardians and stalwart in their mission to protect. However, this protection was used against them by Klardis. She feigned herself as an injured Archfae and collected a large cohort of Hobgoblins to drag to her divine domain. Once they got here, many were tortured until they submitted to her. Upon doing so, she sent out swathes of Hobgoblins upon the armies of Yldrivon, causing many of the Fae to halt in their assault and return home because of the large Hobgoblin army that slaughtered many. When The Shatter ended, the Hobgoblins that remained went into hiding. Over the centuries some have escaped from Kalrdis' influence and tried to join the world, whilst others, still under her influence, have taken hold of their own band of Goblins to do their bidding.

Bugbear

The fuzziest of the Goblinkin, Bugbears are considered by some to be large hulking creatures of madness. This stems from The Shatter, where they were enchanted and became the long-limbed berserkers of Klardis, after they were taken during a plot where she posed as an injured Archfae. From there, the creatures were both blessed and cursed. They were blessed with strength and the silent nature of a lighter creature. However, they were also cursed with a powerful madness that would overtake them during battle. After The Shatter, this curse started to regress, but it can be activated upon a Bugbear randomly, leading many of them to hide isolated in forests, mountains, or dense regions. The Bugbears that interact with people are known for their long arms and powerful strength, both of which allow them to be seen in a positive light in some regions.

Kobold

By far the smallest of the reptilian peoples, Kobolds resemble small dragons, standing no taller than 3 feet tall. They often have a set of rust colored scales that cover their frame, but this can often be glazed and tinted in a similar manner to the scales of their larger draconic cousins. Unlike other dragons, Kobolds cannot seem to release a blast of elemental energies from their mouth, but instead they release a cry that fills their enemies with a sense of panic, and their allies with an emboldening strength. Additionally, its not uncommon for their draconic connection to manifest in one of a few manners, this can lead to strange knowledge or innate magic to match that of some more powerful dragons. Some Kobolds still reside within their warrens, a mass of tunnels they either dig out or invade. Yet more and more Kobolds are adventuring out into the world, learning more about the joys and dangers of the world.

Dhampir often look like a living corpse, with pale skin and hair that seems flat at all times, The most obvious sign is their eyes sinking into their sockets slowly, with more ancient Dhampir having their eyes almost completely sunk into their face. With certain Dhampir entering into society, its clear that there are questions about how to handle the ancestry, are they mortal or monster. The biggest question regards the Dhampir and their lifespan, its currently unclear whether they live the same lifespan as many other races, or if they are immortal unless they are killed. As a result, the outed Dhampir have become a source of study, particularly for the Archani Conclave.
