Introduction to Nonvyrox

Welcome to Nonvyorx, a world of fantasy, mystery, and magical creatures. The world takes heavy inspiration from a vast variety of different worldbuilding elements and combines my love for a mass of genres and tabletop RPGs into one distilled concept.   The world is designed around storytelling at its heart, there are threads I want to pull from a written word, graphic, and tabletop mediu over the course of the next however long I work on the world. It has already had several years of tinkering that have slowly built up the basis of the world that I am still exploring,   Nonvyrox contains a mass of different genres all condensed in the burgeoning world that inhabits these pages. There are ancient technologies similar to that of Sci-Fi tech whilst in another region dark and mysterious forces begin to take hold of the once good lands. This all sounds serious and yet there is whimsy, like a mageocracy mostly comprised of sentient penguins. A smorgusboard of tone, Nonvyorx has a base level of fantastical ideas for fantastical people.

Genres, Concepts, and Themes

High Fantasy & Subversion

The one inspiration I could not escape from. High Fantasy, the creatures of Tolkein and Gygax, the idea of magic permiating the whole realm. While all of these are core to the world, there are elements of subversion. Elves are not just better than everyone because they are ancient, nor are Dwarves all hard-drinking miners with a Scottish twang. The world looks different in each location, so stereotypes are not the norm.

Dark Fantasy

There is a baseling level of Dark Fantasy that drapes across the world. Creatures of a horrific nature exist within the boundaries, and outwith the boundaries of existence. Eldritch horrors can reach into the minds of mortals and grant them access to strange and unusual powers. However, there are some places where different lenses of horror are explored, to a more intense depth. These darker elements of the world are a reflection of the morality and society that has been fostered over centuries and millenia of existence.

Steampunk

The most famous versions of High Fantasy take place in a variant of fuedal europe. This is something I want to pull away from, particularly in some nations where there is a stronger connection with other historical periods. Particularly I want to add in elements of the Rennaisance and early Victorian era to the world. These elements have helped to add in new elements that are focused on the development of technology within Nonvyrox, which is pushing the boundaries of magic and technology.

Sword and Sorcery

While not distinctly called out in many of the continents, the ideas of Sword and Sorcery are extremely relevant when the scope is focused down on one person. Personal stories are at the core of this world, with many people having at least some basic idea of how a blade works and many people using weaponry and magic to fight across the realm.

Gods Exist

The divine beings that shaped the world into what it is today exist and are a core part of the world. The Shattered Pantheon have an innate connection with mortal beings after many were given a sliver of their essence and power to connect them with the font of magic itself. Now, the belief in a being can empower it into a god-like status where it can bestow power on to others.

A Godless Realm

In counterpart to Gods Exist, the world of Nonvyrox is technically a Godless realm. After The Parting, the physical bodies of The Shattered Pantheon were undone and disconnected from the mortal realm. Only the ancient beings of the world and beings who have arrived from across the multiverse are able to present a physical form on the mortal planes.

Continents

Heimter

Genre & Themes: High Fantasy, Recovery
On most maps, Heimter is considered the central continent and as such many hisotians deem it as the heart of the world's political nature. There are legends of great conflicts between the surviving populations on Heimter that some believe the nation is cursed into a cycle of violence. In the modern day, many of the political disputes seem to have been resolved. The northern territories of Myvora ended a civil war that caused strife across the continent. Alongside their close allies Terlas, a dwarven stronghold recently reclaimed from a possesed clan, the two are now at a relative peace. The formerly joined nations of Tal'vorak and Navoral separated after a long slated rebellion that only stopped due to unrecorded peace talks. Leaving only the Tylathoram Coast undisturbed by a major conflict. For now...

Vilura

Genre & Themes: High Fantasy, Religion, Dark Fantasy
The most ancient of settled continents, Vilura has been the haven for culture and religion since The Dawning. The First City, Sovmora, is based within the Viluran Republic, which stands in the south eastern region of the continent. However new forces have established themselves in the north and the east, one a burgeoning mageocracy founded by the Morgalis known as the Kutow Collective, the other a dark city-state that has expanded its influence across the southern reaches of the continent known as Xhen-dra. Yet most of Vilura is covered by ancient, inhospitable mountains which are still to be conquered by adventuring parties and villains alike, a magical song ringing from its peaks...

Kyradon

Genre & Themes: High Fantasy, Steampunk, Chaos Magic
Scarred early in The Shatter, Kyradon was once the home of lush rainforests, now its a coarse a desert covered land. The Slycol Desert is filled with many strange creatures and a power of wild chaotic magics as the result of the Fall to the Void. Now the continent has a line of remaining rainforests that house the Light Elvenhomelands. In the north of the continent there is a strong presence of The Jewelled Alliance, a collection of nation states that have reclaimed the continent and aim to restore the powerhouse that Kyradon once was.

Fieldas

Genre & Themes: High Fantasy, Sword and Sorcery, Expansion, Hope
Fieldas is multifaceted. To the north is the Aonis Wilds which despite being covered by wild nature houses some powerful governments and collectives. There is a class divide that is slowly being brought together thanks to political maneuvers. Standing as a bastion of law and order is the Qil'Soran Republic, yet within its borders many devious groups have slipped through the cracks to find a way to flourish under their law, leading to most people learning to fight even with basic weaponry. Far south are the mysterious Steelwind Lords who have established a merchant class with many other nations.

Ossalimar

Genre & Themes: War, High Fantasy
Ossalimar is a continent defined by war, as much as Nonvyrox itself. After The Shatter, the continent was eventually reclaimed by Malithan Bornate who was able to unite the scattered people of the continent. However, things eventually soured with Bornate becoming the darkest conquerer of the realm until he was conquered and executed by Raynar Ossalimar. After centuries, the people of the Daunka Province fought a short rebellion against the nationalistic Ossalimarian Empire, seperating into two nations at peace, for the moment. More recently, there has been hostility between the Ossalimarian Empire and the Dolvalyn Sovereignty. The two nations have been taking part in a secret war based on disdain for the Dark Elf ruling nobility of the Soveriegnty. The only nation not taking part in a conflict is the Ossaman Tribes who act as protectors of the realm from elemental and natural threats.

The Moon Shards

Genre & Themes: Magic, High Fantasy, Ruins
The most mysterious and mystical of the continents, The Moon Shards is a large collection of islands that have an aura of magic surrounding it that invokes strange and ancient rites into its existence. Each of the islands seem to move around never staying in one place at the same time, some even have started to float in the air slightly in a gravity well. While the magic of the region lures people to the idea of the Shards, the strange magical aura seems to dissuade ships by visions of large creatures and thick fogs. At least, the sailors who have returned swear they are visions...

Great introduction article. I really like the silhouettes of each of the continents next to their intros. :)

This drew me right in! I agree with Serukis, the silhouettes look great, very evocative. I'm very curious now though as to what continent Dryath's Cove is on - I went on a little hunt but couldn't discover it. Is Qiras a continent you haven't listed yet, is it part of Fieldas or somewhere else?

Qiras is one of the islands off Heimter between it and Ossalimar. Its very small, so I'm aiming to link all that together during WorldEmber 2024
