Thog

Thog

Thog is a young orc and the son of Rhug and Bulga, orc builders who moved to Zhyalay to look for work. Regarded as a bit soft and scrawny for an orc of his age he is shunned by other orcs in the city. He is also mostly shunned by humans in the city, who distrust and dislike orcs. Thog's only friend is a young street thief named Kemseth. He has begun to explore and experiment with the earth magic he seems to possess, even though if he is caught he would face the death penalty for being a Magi.

Physical quirks

Special abilities

Thog has an affinity for Earth magic, a skill which he is steadily experimenting with and developing. His patient and intellectual approach to the skill has put him in good stead.

Apparel & Accessories

Dresses in goatskin leather armour, with all orc clothing tending towards been militaristic, reflecting the Orcish culture of always being ready for war or a fight.

Specialized Equipment

Thog was gifted two Orc crafted daggers by his father on his 13 birthday, but leaves them in his room at home, knowing that they will be stolen if he takes them out on the streets.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Thog was born the 5th of 8 children of Rhug and Bulga, an orc couple who worked as wall and house builders for a small orc clan in the northern Spearwall Mountains, to the east of the Seeras Desert. Thog was the third of 4 boys, and proved to be the scrawniest boy in the family, with both of his older brothers and his younger brother ending up bigger, stronger and tougher than him. In fact, his two older sisters proved bigger and stronger than him two. Thog turned to volunteering to watch the goats and exploring alone in his free time, rather than the physical games and fighting most of the other orc children engaged in.   The family moved to Zhyalay when Thog was 10, with Rhug and Bulga looking for work as builders in the city. The humans who dominated the city despised orc migrants however, viewing then as nothing but thugs who became criminals or stole jobs from hardworking humans. As such, Thog was bullied by humans, adults and children alike, and due to his scrawniness struggled to make friends among the other orcs in the city. Thog eventually made friends with the young street thief Kemseth. He occasionally saves his food and sneaks it out of his house to go out and share with her on a rooftop somewhere in the city. In return she has helped to teach him which parts of the city to stick to and which to avoid in order to evade being beaten.   Recently, Thog has found that he has some skill with Earth Magic, and has started experimenting with lifting up rocks and bricks and hurling them by focusing all his energy on the process. He has become quite good at doing so, and can even do so while not looking at the rock anymore, but he is still limited to one fairly medium sized rock or brick for now.

Sexuality

Thog is pretty sure he is straight, but isn't certain. He is attracted to orc and human women and girls alike.

Education

Thog has some basic experience with building, having had to work for and with his parents with their construction job several times. He has some basic combat training from his time in the orc clan, and experience fighting from orc children games and sibling rivalries. That said, his fighting prowess is underwhelming for an orc.

Employment

He often works alongside his parents in their construction work, carrying bricks up to them. He worked as a goatherd boy occasionally while he lived with the Orc clan in the northern Spearwall Mountains.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Thog is steadily developing his Earth Magic skills, proving highly capable at the magic. He is also intelligent and bright, being able to outwit and out-think humans and orcs alike.

Failures & Embarrassments

Thog is the smallest, scrawniest and weakest brother in his family, being beaten consistently even by his 11 year old little brother. In fact, he has never won a fight. His tusks are also taking quite a while to grow out, marking his as a late-grower. He is regarded as weak for an orc, which has led to much teasing from his siblings, other orcs and even some humans. His parents are a little concerned about his development, and his dad teases him about the matter, while both try to generally remain quite supportive.

Mental Trauma

Thog has an aversion to fighting, and prefers to settle disputes through discussion, something which earns him much mockery from orcs and humans alike. He tends to avoid others as a result.

Intellectual Characteristics

Thog can generally outwit others, able to logically deconstruct their arguments and ideas and reveal them to be ridiculous. Unfortunately, these orcs and humans tend to dislike this, and beat him up as a result, while going on holding these ideas. Despite this, Thog still tends to go on arguing his point his others.

Morality & Philosophy

Thog is quite logical and nuanced in his thinking, able to criticise and critique a lot of oversimplified stereotypes, particularly because he is an orc who doesn't meet the stereotype of a big, strong brute who settles disputes through force. He has a strong sense of empathy, and tends to try stick up for and help other underdogs which often ends up with him being beaten up by those who are stronger than him.

Taboos

Thog refuses to steal, to eat stolen goods or drink stolen drinks. This is as in Orc culture you can only own what you make or win through feat of arms. He understands Kemseth's need to steal food, but refuses to take part in doing so, aside from occasionally working as a lookout for her.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Thog always used to dream of becoming an poet, a rare position for an Orc, but one that a few have risen up to with remarkable skill. Upon discovering his affinity for Earth Magic, Thog has thrown himself wholeheartedly into this new skill. He dreams of being able to stand up to those who taunt and attack him with his talents, using these to outdo his physical weaknesses. He wants to make his parents proud, and to no longer be the disappointment of the family.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Creative poet, good cook, patient and hardworking builder and goatherd. He is a bad fighter (fists, sword and bow and arrows alike) and is terrible at lying convincingly.

Likes & Dislikes

Thog loves old Orcish poetry, and likes poetry in general. He like the stray dogs. He likes helping others, and takes great joy from his conversations and exploring with Kemseth.   He despises fighting, and dislikes the rough Orcish physical games. He hates life in Zhyalay, which he views as cramped, dirty and even more violent than life back in the northern Spearwall Mountains.

Virtues & Personality perks

Unshakably loyal, strong sense of right and wrong, hardworking, intelligent and empathetic.

Vices & Personality flaws

Weak for an Orc, pushover who struggles to stand up for himself, tends to annoy those bigger and stronger than him, shy and socially awkward.

Personality Quirks

Strokes his chin when thinking, sporadically runs a hand through his hair, especially when nervous.

Hygiene

Remarkably hygienic and likes to stay clean, more so than most orcs. However, Thog also has a habit of leaving things he owns lying all over the page, and so is quite messy and untidy in that sense. Rarely combs his hair.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Friends with Kemseth.

Family Ties

Thog's family:   Rhug - Father - 42 years old   Bulga - Mother - 40 years old   Torga - Eldest sister - 21 years old   Orek - Eldest brother -19 years old   Grok - Older brother - 17 years old   Abraka - Older sister - 15 years old   Drak - Younger brother - 10 years old   Udra - Youger sister - 8 years old   Vruda - Yougest sister - 5 years old

Religious Views

The family worships the Orcish pantheon, particlarly Gradrak, the Orcish minor God of Work and Labour, and Vraag, the Orcish King of the Gods and God of War. Thog personally worships Dagra, the obscure minor Orcish Goddess of Poetry, though he tends to keep this from his family, as he would be mocked by his brothers for doing so.

Social Aptitude

Thog is socially awkward, struggling to find those who he cane have intellectual conversations with, and struggling to find common ground with his more traditionally rough and tough parents, brothers and sisters.

Mannerisms

Thog gestures quite wildly with his hands when discussing a topic that interests him, or when reciting a poem. The rest of the time he has learned to keep his hands held tight at his side to avoid mocking. He tends to be quite hunched over with his head bowed and eyes averted when talking to those he isn't comfortable with, or if he is feeling weak or beaten.

Hobbies & Pets

Thog recites old Orcish poems and comes up with his own in his spare time. He has recently started experimenting with his Earth Magic. He goes wandering through the city with Kemseth when they have time, sometimes sneaking out at night to do so. While he refuses to steal he has acted as a lookout for her on numerous occasions.

Speech

Thog was a lisp, stammers and stutters when nervous. He is prone to speaking softly and trailing off on tangents, all of which increases the mocking against him.

Wealth & Financial state

Thog's family fit into what could roughly be called a lower middle class, earning some good money from their construction work, although their finances are stretched by the large size of the family and the ravenous appetite of the family members, particularly Thog's father and brothers. The family has to work hard long hours and has to stretch funds, but is generally comfortable and aren't in a desperate situation.
