Amfilo (a.k.a. Ami)

A young slave owned by the wealthy merchant Salbalaar Sarir, Amfilo dreams of freedom, and hopes to one day escape from her life of servitude. Recently she has discovered a talent for Air and Storm Magic, one that she is trying to keep secret so as to avoid execution as a Magi. She is slowly trying to quietly build her skill however, hoping to use it to help her escape.

Tall for her age and skinny, with long lanky limbs. Fast runner and physically fit.

Facial Features

Fairly high cheekbones, full lips, intelligent and haunting brown eyes. Pupils sometimes glow red in a certain light.

Identifying Characteristics

Her sharp, intelligent and haunting eyes are her most identifiable feature. Gyada Sarir has locked her in a chest on numerous occasions after accusing her of glaring at her. It is said that her eyes are very expressive, and that they often reflect deep sorrow or anger. Occasionally shows momentary curiosity or happiness when spending a few moments with Azedi One-foot, her one friend in all the world.

Apparel & Accessories

Dressed on most days in a set of drab old greyish tunic, some of the cheapest clothes available. When she is clearing away plates from the table, especially when there are guests, she wears a newer and longer black tunic, designed to make her look fancier in front of the family and guests.

Personal history

Amfilo was raised by her paternal grandmother, Nceba, in the small village of Ikhaya in Safri. She never knew her parents, who died when she was very young, and her grandmother refused to answer any of her questions about them, as well as keeping her close to her side at all times.
When Amfilo was 8 years old, a Kushari slave ship landed near the village, raiding for slaves. The slavers raided the village, killing many of the village elders, enslaving the adults and children of the village, taking them north to Zhyalay by ship to sell them Amfilo and Nceba among those taken north, but Ncebo died on the trip from a disease she caught in the cramped, squalid and airless slave hold. Amfilo was sold as a "cleaning girl" to Salbalaar Sarir, a wealthy silk merchant from an old family with an elegant three floor Mansion in Temar Tal. There Amfilo has been a slave of the Sarir family for the past five years. Salbalaar and his family have been harsh and sharp masters. She has made friends with Azedi One-foot, the old Msengu slave gardener, but has no other friends.
Sh dreams of escaping from her masters, but she knows she could loose a foot for trying to escape. She has been experimenting in secret with the air and storm magic she has recently learned that she can use, but knows that the punishment for being a Magi is death, and so does so in secret.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Amfilo has been a fast and strong runner from an early age, and tries to stay fit and ready for an escape at all times. She swiftly learned Kushari after entering the Sarir household, proving to be good at learning quickly. She is also rapidly learning to master her Magic, particularly her lightning magic, and can already create a small lightning charge, one she thinks could be large enough to electrocute a full grown man and leave him unconscious. She has done an excellent job of keeping her powers a secret however.

Failures & Embarrassments

Amfilo blames herself from not doing more to fight the slavers when they came, obeying her grandmother's orders to hide, only to be found and dragged out. She feels guilty for not doing more to save her grandmother on the route over in the slave ship, even though there was nothing she could do to save her.

Mental Trauma

Has developed severe claustrophobia from spending months in the slave hold, and often suffers night terrors where she recalls the events. Gyada Sarir, the lady of the Sarir household, locked her in a chest after she accidentally broke a porcelain plate while clearing them away after the family had a supper at short while after Amfilo had been bought by the family. Gyada learned of her claustrophobia then, and has used it as a punishment and as a threat ever since, knowing that it terrifies her.

Intellectual Characteristics

Amfilo has always been very curious and inquisitive, but learned to suppress open signs of this in the presence of her owners. She has adopted a highly focused and openly obedient approach when working so as to avoid punishment as far as possible, while always planning her escape.

Amfilo unsurprisingly despises the institution and practice of slavery. She despises the rich as well in general, viewing them as incompetent brutes who rely on slaves and workers to support themselves.

Hygiene

Amfilo is exceptionally, almost obsessively neat and tidy. This was initially the result of her strict grandmother, but has since been as a way to avoid being punished by Gyada Sarir for untidy quarters and for making the beds in the Sarir household less than perfectly.

Her Grandmother Ncebo raised her, but died in the hold of a slave ship on the journey between Safri and Zhyalay.

Religious Views

Officially worships Ume and is a member of the Syedist faith, as she and all slaves in the Sarir household are required to do. In truth still worships the deities of Safri, and sometimes prays to the spirit of her grandmother for guidance.

Social Aptitude

Amfilo has always been socially awkward, ever since she was a little girl. Living alone with her reclusive and protective grandmother did nothing to help that. The brutal events of her enslavement and her being transported to Zhyalay, and her subsequent harsh treatment by the Sarir family, have done nothing but add to that suspicion. Azedi One-foot, the Sarir's elderly slave gardener, is her one and only friend.

Hobbies & Pets

In the few moments she isn't working during the day, Amfilo likes to be out in the garden and talk to Amfilo, admiring the trees, bushes, herbs and plants he tends to, or else watching birds flying overhead.
At night, Amfilo sneaks away to an abandoned room to practice her magic in secret.

Very soft spoken, and has learnt to speak only when spoken to by all except for Azedi.
