Thax and Ylfni were two different continents in different planes ages ago. However, during the Emergence, Ylfni was thrust into this realm by the gods. This was due to the Ylfnian people's pleas to find a new realm with more materials for spellcasting as they ran their world via magic. Thax, being of a realm of lower magic, didn't squander what resources they had, but few people could utilize magic in the first place. Those in Thax that could cast magic were born with what came to be known as "Gifts" in their bloodlines. Those born with the Divine Gift were destined to service the gods directly, whereas those with the Arcane Gift were direct descendants of several flings with the Weaver of Magic.

When the realms were thrust together as a result of the gods, the Isles that separated them were filled with terrible storms and raging oceans. Those who went from Ylfni to Thax also discovered that most of them were not gifted by bloodlines. This meant that many of the magic users from Ylfni were rendered powerless, thus a forceful takeover was neigh impossible to achieve. Thaxian people who went to Ylfni found that there were resources in the Ylfnian continent that were deemed relatively useless to Ylfni, but to Thax were brand new and could be further researched to develop new technologies. This meant the two continents and their nations would have to negotiate to get the materials each party needed.

As for the gods, the Thaxian's were initially resentful due to the initial attempts at invasion and takeover from Ylfni. However, at the moment, they are grateful for the chance to learn from new materials and advance far beyond where they were before. As for the Ylfnians, after realizing that this new realm didn't benefit them as much as they'd hoped, are more resentful of the situation. Some of the nations currently plot how to remove this separation between the two continents in regards to magical abilities. This could allow them to forcefully take what they needed rather than negotiate. So far, that has not followed through yet.
