Vegetarianism

Vegetarianism in the time of the Red is not just the statement on personal ethics that it used to be. It's a sign of wealth.
Beggars literally cannot be choosers when it comes to what they get to ingest to survive, and for someone to opt-out of what is considered the highest form of luxury to most, shows that they can afford to have choices. That isn't to say that vegetarianism is a fashion for Beavers, because it isn't, and being able to put real meat on the table will always be the true sign that you have made it.
More to the point that if someone's made that choice, it's because they've had the option to, and that option usually isn't given to people who have to stretch a single serving of Kibble over multiple days or otherwise have to miss rent.
Of course, going vegetarian, or even vegan, still comes from the same reasons as before the collapse, but your typical animal-rights activist will not turn down a meal with meat if that's what's on offer unless they can afford to.
