Argus
//Alternative name; Homonculus//
With the ability to create facsimiles of life to do the bidding of their will, many spell-casters find use in making golems, automatons, and other magically animated servants that are bound to their will an extremely useful tool. But not many would expect that a spell could go awry, resulting in their creations sometimes gaining sentience and sapience. It was not thought possible for new lifeforms to come into being outside of the natural progresses, even if magic is one of the known building blocks required for life to exist in Nielea. But the existence of the Argus has proven that the creation of true new life is possible.
Cousins to the Gargoyles, Argus are magical constructs that have glitched and found self-awareness and intelligence that was not given to them in the rituals that birthed their existence. They are a rare race in the world, as they require such specific circumstances to occur to where even intentional creation of an Argus is difficult to recreate.
Basic Information
Genetics and Reproduction
Unlike Gargoyles, Argus are created by a large variety of rituals. The differences between each of these rituals changes heavily, with the only consistence is that the ritual in question is being used to create some of solid humanoid construct. An Argus can gain their sapience during their creation, or further along in their existence as a construct. Sometimes it might be the result of very strong magics being infused into their body, other times the wrong pronunciation of a word or even just a syllable is enough to cause the spell to eventually glitch the construct into being an Argus. Sometimes it's even speculated that the use of a soul in a ritual may result in the birth of an Argus.
Civilization and Culture
History
Long before the race was known as Argus, they were instead called anomalies. The first recorded and historically significant anomaly was a clay golem given many eyes. Its function was to act as a sentry to an unknown person. But some sort of malfunction in this golem's magics led to it gaining sapience. Intrigued by the world around it, the golem took up a name- Argus, the Beholder- and left out into the world to learn more about it. It took a great interest in reading and philosophy, and soon became well known, not only because of its existence as a self-aware construct, but also for how wise the golem had become. This anomaly created awareness of the existence of its kind, and their capability to become so much like the other races- if not something even greater.
Because of Argus's wisdom and fame, the anomalies that came after it took up its name in its honor to refer to themselves as a whole. Eventually, enough Argus existed for small pockets of Argus that could be consider villages. They used this to their advantage to grow in knowledge and skill, as well as to solidify their existence as a valid race. These rare villages welcome any fellow Argus with open arms, and will offer resources to their own in order to help their kind exist.
