Gates

Gates are interplanar portals that open up naturally and unpredictably.
Naturally-occurring Gates appear without any discernable pattern, and can be of any size from the tiny pinhole gates suspected to be the reason the air in the Shadow Plane continues to be breathable, to very large Gates like The Abyss. Gates typically have well-defined edges, but they may rarely have semi-permeable or unclear boundaries, such as The First World. Naturally-occurring Gates are by far the most common type of Gate, and their defining characteristic is their instability. As far as modern research has been able to discern, there is no way to predict how long a Gate will remain open, or even whether it will close slowly or instantaneously. Larger Gates seem to last longer, but even some very large Gates have closed without warning (see The Crossroads in <ancient city>).
Artificial Gates are typically found in only two places: The works of Dragons and the work of the Gods. Dragons have the ability to naturally create a type of Gate that is short-lived, but large and stable enough for the dragon to pass through. Some very old dragons have used their innate Gate-creating abilities to invent spells which can be used by arcanists, which is why they are utilized in some middling to high level magic, or very rarely in extremely controlled ways by low-level magic. Today, any arcane spell which creates or controls a Gate, however briefly, is the work of dragons.
As could be expected, Divine Magic is also capable of creating and/or controlling Gates, though this is almost always limited to the most powerful of divine spells and/or the direct intervention of the Gods.

Manifestation

Gates usually appear as circular windows without frames in midair, through which can be seen a scene of another Planes.
