The Nexus

Though commonly called the Material Plane, it would be more accurate to call this realm an area of overlap between all four of the true planes. That's why academics (or those intending to sound like academics) call it "the Nexus".
Imbalances in the relative influence of individual planes within a given region of the Nexus can greatly affect the local ecology. For example, an area of stronger sylvan influence might be covered in a magical forest, while an area of heightened elemental influence might be filled with active volcanoes and constant, roiling storms. These imbalances can shift or move over time (sometimes gradually, sometimes abruptly), causing disruptive events ranging from localized inconveniences to historic catastrophes, and everything in between.
The Nexus is populated by a wide variety of sapient peoples. The people of the Nexus are consistently humanoid in their basic appearance, but many of them display signs of planar influence (such as a tiefling's affinity for a particular element, or an elf's fey-like qualities).
