Cockatrice Eggs: A Dangerous Delicacy

Cockatrices are dangerous, but their eggs are delicious. This creates a complicated situation in which eggs are highly sought-after but you can't just put a fence around your backyard and have a few cockatrices running around.   Cockatrice farms exist, but they're tightly regulated due to safety concerns. After all, raising a population of creatures that could and would eat you if given the chance is a risky business. Thus, a cockatrice farm is expensive and rare, which is reflected in the price and availability of their eggs at high-class eateries.   On the other hand, the eggs themselves aren't regulated at all. This means that if adventurers happen across a cockatrice nest in the wild and can procure the eggs, they can rush them back to potential buyers for some quick cash. This would probably lead to over-hunting, if not for the fact that (as mentioned earlier) cockatrices eat people.   Naturally, there are those who wish to reap the benefits of egg sales while cutting corners to increase profits. Some will simply keep a farm in secret without proper safety measures, abandoning it and pretending to have nothing to do with it if anything ever goes wrong. Others will find an area of wilderness where cockatrices live, then feed and harvest them (effectively farming) while claiming that the creatures are all still "wild."   Regardless of where the eggs come from, discerning palates will seek cockatrice omelets and other dishes whenever visiting a city large enough to house a farm, and residents of wilderness-adjacent settlements will pay good money to get a plate of their own when adventurers happen to bring even a single egg to the local tavern.
