Bivuel

Bivuel is one of the gods worshiped by the mortal people of Nexus. Also known as the Hearthflame, she is the god of homes, warmth, hospitality, safety, and welcoming light.

Teachings and Values

One of the primary tenets of Bivuel is the sanctity of the home. For example, one must take care to make sure one's home is able to serve its function as a place of peace and rest, not letting it fall into excessive disrepair or be so fraught with outside concerns that rest is impossible.   Related to the sanctity of the home is the importance of hospitality toward those without access to their own homes. Because a home is a sacred place, the clergy of Bivuel teach the importance of offering rest and respite for travelers, as well as finding new homes for refugees or other homeless persons.   Bivuel's teachings hold that to transgress against another's home—such as by intrusion or the abuse of hospitality—is a major taboo. Likewise, to expel someone from your home without due cause or to abuse or exploit the homeless is far from trivial.   To defile a home, such as by using it as a hiding place for dark deeds, is blasphemy against Bivuel herself.

Social Roles

Among the gods of the Nexus, Bivuel is arguably the most associated with practical elements of society. While she has her share of cultural touchstones—such as being called upon to bless a newly founded settlement—her clergy are heavily active in a variety of social programs.   Funerals are almost always officiated by Bivuel's priests, offering the rites of Final Homecoming for the deceased. If a funeral is handled by an ecumenical priest—or even a layperson, depending on circumstances—the prayers offered will nonetheless center on Bivuel.   Homeless shelters and similar facilities are typically consecrated in Bivuel's name, and their staff tends to include a large proportion of devotees (whether clergy or layfolk). Even outside of formal programs, the Hearthflame encourages people to reserve a bit of space in their own homes (insofar as they're able) to assist travelers or other "unrooted" folk who might cross their paths.
