Kingship

The title and role of the King of Tariksan is a lifelong commitment, although can be ended abruptly if a king loses support of enough of his lords. The King is responsible for deciding which laws are countrywide, granting new lordships, and overseeing the national forces.

Requirements

The king must not be a lord, although it is common for a lord to give up their lordship to be king. They must be suggested by a lord, who in the time before the gathering will collect signitures of support from fellow lords. The five highest supported people are the candidates at the gathering, and spend days making their case before the assembly of lords before one is eventually elected (with a majority).

Appointment

Kings are appointed at the gathering, in the great hall, at the witness of all thier supporting lords. The to-be king chooses who crowns them, and it is common for this person to go on to be an advisor to the new king, and often they have significant arcane abilities.

Duties

The King is expected to chair the meetings in the great hall at the gathering. They must also bear witness to the new recruits to the national guard when they become fully qualified soldiers. On the last day of novsavan, the king must execute the first of the condemned traitors, to mark the end of the year, and remind them of the laws they have in place. (Such traitors will have committed treason, murder in more than one township, or threatened the life of a lord. Usually they are killed by one of the appointed excecutioners.)

Responsibilities

The king must issue orders to the national guard, ensure the national laws are up to date, and decide if an area can be a township. They must also meet with the leaders of other nations to agree to treaties or trade deals.
