Trilavor

Basic Information

Anatomy

They have four limbs. The two front legs have tough, scoop-like appendages for digging. The back legs have feet with rough textured soles and flexible phalanges that can move independently like ape hands. They walk on all fours, but they often sit upright and use their back legs for eating and detailed grooming. They have coarse fur on their backs/the top of their bodies, and a thick, tough skin on the underside. They have two large eyes on each side of their heads, one set can see infrared and the other sees light. They have large noses. They have two rows of teeth. The outer row is incisors and the back row is molars.

Genetics and Reproduction

They are all hermaphroditic. The parents excrete a fluid after mating rituals into a water source. The fluids combine to form gelatinous egg-like structures similar to frog eggs. The parents don't guard the eggs at all. The eggs sink and attach to the soil. The young absorb microscopic nutrients through the egg membrane until they develop all their limbs. At this point they instinctively burrow into the adjoining soil and dig to the surface to take their first breath. Adults typically mate anywhere from 1-3 times a year.

Growth Rate & Stages

They develop in the egg for 5-8 weeks. When they emerge they are typically 3-4 inches long and 1&1/2 inches tall. They grow rapidly for the next year, at which point they reach maturity. They grow to be 14 to 26 inches long and 12 to 18 inches tall.

Ecology and Habitats

They live in wet, temperate regions. They live in burrows that they make in clay soil. They live near water sources and they are able to eat most plants and enjoy some insects.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They forage for plants and insects, and they often tunnel from their burrows to nearby areas with their preferred plants or insects.

Behaviour

They are very skittish, especially when they first emerge from the water. They are a prey species. They dig rapidly to escape most predators.
