Troll (trohll)

Trolls are offspring of primordials under element of earth. In their cavernous domain in the stonecombs, both creation and destruction are in their way of life.   Trolls, being an otherplanar race were not commonly seen until post Planaclysm whereupon their civilisation was fractured into Mythereum. This scattered civilisation has sects across the galaxy and possibly beyond. In some places they dominate, while in others they hide in the shadows beneath the surface.   Before The Planaclysm few trolls had crossed over to Mytherium. Those who did passed through those incredibly rare gates between made by titans who allowed them to mingle. The rifts they used back then most often were under bridges where they lured people into the darkness to eat them alive.   Trolls have a rather advanced civilisation, but some do engage in rather uncivilised activites. Some trolls are prone to violence and some even consume humanoid flesh or garbage which is suited well to their physiology.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Trolls vary wildly as do all races but most all possess the following traits.   Most trolls possess skin like stone, hard and cool to the touch and often tough to break. The stoneskin weighs them down heavily in their usually rather large bodies. An average troll has the standard humanoid makeup of body aside from their reproductive abilities differing. Additionally, some trolls have additional eyes, arms, legs, and even in rare cases wings while always possessing horns. Some trolls also lack standard noses and ears while possessing other biological means of retaining their associated senses.

Biological Traits

Trolls commonly have psionic abilities which function as the backbone of their societal order. Speaking with the dead, telekinesis, telepathy, and mind control are all common abilities among trolls. In addition, many trolls possess blood that is regenerative to other creatures due to minerals generated in their bodies. These minerals stimulate healing in most other creatures but not in trolls.

Genetics and Reproduction

Troll reproduction is unique when compared to most races which reproduce sexually. Trolls mix their blood and sometimes other pieces to feed it in a slurry to different forms of insect which then reproduce in their normal fashion laying eggs which hatch into trolls instead of their normal offspring. This process can involve any number of troll participants with them being more similar to each individual parent the less of them there are. If there is only one parent then the offspring will be a genetic clone of the parent. Troll leaders often find that method desirable for their descendants to be the same as them and to continue their reign. This whole reproduction cycle can take anywhere from 1-1000~ years depending on differing variables such as the insect selected, and the traits of the parent(s).

Growth Rate & Stages

When a troll is born from that which grants it life they are left to fend for themself until a parent, oftentimes not its biological one(s), decides to begin taking care of them. Even then these parents are still rather distant and the children grow little attachment.   Trolls age to adulthood quickly in what would be 13 Mytharian years as their body grows and their horns reach their full development. Around then a troll will usually perform a rite of passage on their etching day wherein their closest friends and family etch carvings into their skin for achievements upto this point, hope for the future, and personal things. These carvings are then usually expanded upon for the rest of their life as various milestones occur.   As a troll continues their life, hair may grey and eyesight usually fades, but they lose very little of their strength and vitality until their time to die comes. These deaths vary but most trolls live for a good few hundred years until they are killed or finally die of old age. Some even live longer than that but lifespans vary depending on the type of troll.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Throughout history there have been times in which trolls were extorted and harvested for their regenerative blood so it could be sold. They have also at times been used for their psionic abilities.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Most trolls possess standard senses, in addition to darkvision due to their time underground. Some few trolls are born with powerful psionic and extrasensory abilities, though most are not. When one is gifted with a spark of magic their blood colour is darker than others in the same caste of the spectrum, usually in addition to some mutation of the eyes.   Examples of troll witches are Briska Johnsn, a flourite troll witch born with psionics. She has four eyes with two pupils in each eye. Cresie Beilar, a rust troll is a witch born with rectangular pupils

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Trolls rely heavily on insectoid titans capable of processing their genetic material and lay troll eggs so they can reproduce. It is believed that trolls cannot naturally reproduce without the symbiotic relationship with these insectoids that lay their eggs.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

When a troll finds their offsping they will typically name it after someone or something important to them, usually taking great care in selecting this name to the point the child might go several days, weeks, or sometimes even months without a proper name until one of its parents can think of one, or until all its parents can agree on one.   Common names are things after family members or friends who have perished, or after an important object that has greatly aided the troll. Trolls will most often name their offsping in their mother language of trollspeak, with most of these names being six letters in length.   The origins of troll names varies, as do many things in troll society. Trolls who are named by parents are often named after someone or something important to them, usually taking great care in this selection. Others are born without names and must select them themselves, or are given names by others later.

Beauty Ideals

What humans may consider ugly become what a lot of trolls consider beautiful. In most troll societies gnarled teeth and large horns are seen as more respectable and beautiful. The larger the horns and teeth, the more attractive a troll is usually considered. Trolls are often attracted to muscular trolls who are larger than themselves.

Courtship Ideals

Trolls arebig into gifts and food. One promise a troll might make to another is that they will cook for the other until their final breath. Truly, so romantic.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Trolls mainly speak a dialect of primordial, being children of the primordials. They have some words and symbols of their own, but most of their language is taken from primordial.

History

The inception of trolls had them risen from the blood of a wounded primordial after the entropy war when the one world was split into the planescape of Mytharia.   Rising from this blood trolls went underground into the caves of the stonecombs where their civilisation began. These trolls were violent and fought for supremacy between who they thought was better and for the abilities that some possessed while others didn't. Eventually trolls settled into a societal order with less lateral violence, instead they directed it at others seeking to conquer the infinite stonecombs. Troglodytes among other races saw their numbers decimated during these times.   After The Planaclysm the society they had worked so hard to build was fractured. some seek to rebuild it, some have built fractions of it. Others just seek bloodshed to strike out at the loss which has occurred to them. Troll numbers dwindle divided across the stars and beneath the surface of some planets while having been separated from the insects which are integral to their lifecycle. Many trolls now adventure to find these insects to help continue their species forward.

Common Myths and Legends

A common myth among underground trolls is that the sun will petrify them and turn them to stone. This legend permeates many troll communities and leads to fear of going aboveground or out into the sun. In reality, the sun isn't more deadly to them than it is for most others. They do petrify, but it's akin to human sunburns. it happens very gradually and can be healed from as long as the whole body doesn't become petrified.

Skin tones vary greatly between some kinds of trolls but are most often grey. This is because troll skin is made from stone and as such the colour and tone vary depending on the type of stone. Trolls will often carve markings into their skin later in life to denote different achievements and experiences, as well as friends and foes.
