Gravid

The basis of FTL travel and also a powerful personal tool with military and scientific applications.

Discovery

Gravid technology was discovered by the Syrac in a laboratory experimenting with subatomic particles. The discovery of the graviton, the subatomic particle which mediates the force of gravity, sparked a rush for the means to control it, much like the electron discovered several decades prior. Many prototypes were developed, but none could control the particle with enough efficiency to be meaningful in its use. Computer based technologies could manipulate a great amount of gravitons via electrical induction in a manner similar to a radio transmitter. This worked to create the necessary electromagnetic fields to manipulate gravitons, but the fields were unmovable and practical application was limited. In time, one inventor by the name of Gali created a means of control that skirted the edge of morality. He interfaced his Aineto directly to his own brain in order to create Gravid fields. While it initially caused migraines, stomach cramps, and other neurological and biological issues, in time he was able to create and manipulate Gravid fields without issue. This technique was passed on to other Syrac and eventually became a mainstay technology. The use of computers to manipulate Gravid fields was eventually utilized in starships to create the Hypatia Drive, meaning the same technology used for various practical applications is also used to achieve Faster Than Light travel.

Complexity

Gravid technology requires merely an Aineto device running the correct programs and the appropriate neural implants. In theory, this means any living being could become a Gravid user, but in truth, not all are capable of the mental processing necessary to use it properly, if at all. Many experience neurological and biological issues, and while most of the time these can be mitigated through training or medication, some experience debilitating side effects up to and including death. Fortunately, the implant process is reversible should unexpected side effects occur. More often than not, however, the potential side effects are more than enough to keep most people away from the technology.

Applications

Gravid technology is utilized primarily for military applications. Due to the nature of Gravid fields, they are capable of increasing or decreasing the weight of an object without affecting mass. A number of standardized uses include increasing the weight of a target's feet to effectively pin them in place, decreasing the weight of a target to allow them to move faster, or even creating small scale Alcubierre zones within which a form of "teleportation" can occur. These powers, respectively, are known as Pin, Boost, and Ferry.
Gravid technology can also be used for construction purposes, though the number of Gravid users outside of military fields is very low.
