Day of Joyful Toil

The Day of Joyful Toil (Or simply The Toil) is a festival which celebrates the joy of creation and one's passion in their craft. It is observed chiefly by individuals and communities who primarily worship Gowyr, the deity of craftsmen and light.   The Toil coincides with the summer solstice, when the sun shines in the sky the longest. During this longest day of the year, worshippers of The Shaper craft their greatest works, stopping only when the Sun disappears behind the horizon. Depending on the latitude, this intensive labour can last anywhere from 12 hours to 30 entire days. Participants near the equator make sure to begin their process at the crack of dawn, while those closer to the poles customarily begin their work at the noon of the solstice.   When the Sun finally finally settles, the faithful of Gowyr gather to compare and celebrate each other's works, and these fine crafts are appreciated by all. Fine wines, meals and baked goods, which too fall under the purview of Gowyr, are thoroughly enjoyed at the end of The Toil.   The festival focuses on celebrating the joy of creation, but in certain societies, a winning piece is voted for and the maker is crowned the King or Queen of The Toil. In these communities competition can be fierce, and The Toil is not without intrigue and drama, calling some to question whether the festival has lost its original spirit or not.   Works which are not consumed at the end of the festival are generally gifted to the community. The craftsman is allowed to choose their beneficiary, but many choose to revoke this right and instead leave the choice to the leader of their community. At times these crafts are instead sacrificed at Gowyr's forge, in hopes that Old Fire-Heart will bless the craftsman with even greater, divine creativity next year.
