The Goddess Yabacherax

The Lady of Lost Breath Yabacherax

The goddess Yabacherax, the lady of lost breath, the wide eyes of the drowning dead, the reflection-eater and throat-seizer, the cool water that fills your veins in the face of death. She takes the form of a crayfish with a woman's face, as porcelain-pale as the bodies of the drowned, with three claws -- "one for each ankle and one for your throat," so the legend goes.

Physical Description

Body Features

Her body is that of a blue-grey crayfish, dark enough to blend in with the river mud and pale underneath. Her face, tucked under the edge of her carapace and her antennae, is a pale human's face, with half-lidded false eyes. Her true eyes, in the ordinary place for a crayfish, are pale and filmed over; they glimmer like pearls under the dark waters. She had three claws -- one on her right and two on her left. Inside the curve of her claws, she has human fingers, pale and bloated, but just mobile enough to wrap around your ankles, or your throat.

Identifying Characteristics

Morality & Philosophy

Yabacherax is the power you feel every time fear freezes your blood in the face of death, every time dread stops your breath, every time you feel swept under by your circumstances, every time that survival becomes as immaterial and unreachable as air is at the bottom of a flooded river. She's the goddess of drowning, both in water and in terror, and she's the goddess of helplessness in the face of death and the flood.
