Motherborne

When Mother dreams a new race, they come into existence.   Sometimes they are formed from stone or water, but more often they are born to a different race. The first deertaurs were born from wildlings. Pregnancies affected by the Mother never occur in those who do not want children, but may occur to unpartnered and/or celibate. Motherborne bearers often have intense cravings for sableine flowers, and it's considered one of the major markers that your child will be a new race.   Motherborne are nearly worshipped. Causing them serious harm is completely anathema, and those who kill one accidentally often give their own lives in penance.   The mother has a particular color associated with her, a violet so deep it's nearly black. This color cannot be dyed in any way. Any dye mix that would get close to it immediately turns to black. Motherviolet is used to identify motherborne and second generation creatures. A sigil of the color may appear on someone carrying a motherborne, and they commonly appear on the child.   Nonsentient motherborne have a wreath of motherviolet in the air around them, which repels natural predators and draws sableine. Sentient motherborne are more subtle about it, but they are often gifted with the discovery of a shawl or blanket of motherviolet that they can use to create something for themselves. Usually that gift from the Mother is saved until the motherborne reaches maturity and knows more about themself.   New races are usually born with between three and twelve members. The first duty of any motherborne is to offer themself to the sableine once they are mature. This also tends to draw them together, as there aren't that many sableine colonies and motherborne tend to be born on the same continental region. It's considered extremely selfish to breed with another motherborne, as you risk the health of the later generations due to inbreeding. However, better to breed with anyone than not breed. A motherborne not breeding is a complete scandal, as it's seen as a waste of the Mother's gift of life.   The child of a motherborne may or may not be marked in the same way. Nonsentient species are almost always protected in the second generation to give them more of a chance to spread, but it's much rarer for sentient second generationals to be marked. Generally, the frailer your race is and the fewer members you started with, the more likely your children will inherit the gift. Third generationals never inherit the gift.   Those motherborne who are carried by another race generally stay with that race as they grow, though any sentients will happily take in a motherborne. Element-born ones often spend their childhood wandering the lands and learning bits from as many people as they can. Once a motherborne unites with the others of their race, they share experiences and start to figure out what they want to do with the rest of their lives.
