The Sangoire Quill

Upon entering one is immediately welcomed with a scent of rosemary, mint, and something more earthy that is difficult to place if you’re not intimately familiar with it. There are shelves upon shelves of books, some of them glassed off, and some easily accessible by dark redwood ladders that slide silently. All the woodwork is dark and luminous, as though it has just been polished. In Niches here and there, there are painting supplies, in progress manuscripts, old playbills and concert tickets, Some of these dating back long before the elegant owner could have possibly been attending shows. The owner, a pale redhead, is known to be at work in one of the niches, heard singing from some far reaches of the house, or sprawled over one of the many plush pieces of furniture placed around. The upstairs is much the same as the downstairs and on every available inch of wall there are portraits, paintings, and photographs (some of them must be of her ancestors because they bear a striking resemblance). One portrait of note is of a young redhaired and a girl of a similar age that is labeled “Mary W. S. and ….” the second name is illegible.
The books all appear to be older, the ones behind glass may even be originals… and there are some that must be fake because they are titles that have never been heard of from some fairly well-known people. Most of the space is like a time capsule. Through the back door you can see a covered patio space and hear hints of waters and chimes. The only thing that hints at the modern is the sleek and simple counter, behind which a small, bespectacled blonde usually maintains watch, and what appears to be a palm scanner at a door that could only lead down….

Architecture

The Sangoire Quill is located in the historic W.E. Price Home. This Queen Anne Revival house was designed by Morgantown architect, Elmer Jacobs, and built circa 1902. The Quill still boasts the home’s original hand carved oak woodwork, stained glass windows, and hardwood floors, providing an exquisite showcase for it's many treasures.
