Roger Wood

Dr. Roger Wood

Roger was born in 1935, in Oxford, England. Raised in a small messy home filled with books, his father was one of the surrealist poets, who extolled the virtues of the “primitives” and filled the house with chanting and music from far off lands. His mother was a warm and amiable woman, very well liked in the town and with many admirers. His childhood was dominated by World War 2, during which his father served in the home guard. Long nights were spent huddled under blankets reading books. Owing to his father’s eccentricity, there was a dearth of charming books for children. Instead evenings were filled with air raid sirens and books in Greek, Latin, German, or ancient Egyptian. Man's Life is This Meat by David Gascoyne, Dalí's Conquest of the Irrational, the Malleus Maleficarum, and the Keys of Solomon… Strange texts for a young boy, but when German planes are shaking the slate from the roof you don’t complain.
