On-going Investigations Continue to be On-going
Interesting information came to light during Daniel's inquiry into the Officer Denton quoted in the article about the bodies found on the Rail Trail. It seems there is no Officer Denton, which lends itself to interesting possibilities. 1) The quote was fabricated. 2) The quote was misattributed. 3) Someone who identified themselves as Officer Denton gave the quote. These possibilities present options as to how to proceed: 1) create a shell email account and email the author of the article directly with the question. 2) Write a letter to the editor 'calling them out' for their lie and accuse them of attempting to fear-monger. 3) a bit of both. I messaged Daniel and discussed the options. Either way, he has indicated he would like me to compose the email/letter. We had not come to a decision as to how to proceed before the group excursion to the Mason Jar.
Roger spoke with Ava and myself briefly, stating there was no longer even a hint of potential danger to the two of us and we are therefor able to travel without restriction. He also indicated there was a price he was paying for the assistance, but would not provide any additional details.
While Ava and I travelled to the Mason Jar together - as did Quentin and Wilhelm, with Daniel traveling separately - she did not follow me inside and was gone when I left.
Inside the bar, there seemed to be two distinct group of 'bikers' and a smattering of unaffiliated individuals. Quentin spoke with the more... authentic appearing group, which did not seem to be going all too well - no matter how much money he was giving them. Honestly, I am slightly surprised Quentin did not consider how being willing to pay them a substantial amount of money for 'information' would not seem odd to a group that may have been or currently is on the wrong side of the law. To each clan, their own.
Not long after I arrived, one of the less authentic appearing group members was threatening and verbally assaulting a man due to his 'lack of respect' for an unidentified female and berated due to his potential origins. This did not escalate into full conflict, which my attempt to de-escalate had no impact on. The aggressive individual's friend dropped some papers, which I collected in the confusion. Daniel followed the group - Christian Bikers, 'We Ride With Christ' - outside, obtained their plate numbers, and - apparently - sabotaged a few of the bikes of the other, real biker gang [Pagans - there is a lot of information easily available online].
More avenues of investigation to pursue, with no obvious correlation.
Updated Information and New Kindred
My request for records for Cindy Krause came through; basically she had been in the hospital due to an infection related to a miscarriage she suffered at 32 weeks gestation - narcotics had been in her system at the time of the miscarriage. So far, there are intersecting p0ints in all information gathered:
1) Drugs or Junkies.
- Declared Junkies by Officers during the Wild Camp investigation.
- Unidentifiable bodies found along Rail Trail declared to be Junkies (again by police Officers).
- Cindy Krause - who's hospital bracelet was found at the camp - had narcotics in her system when she miscarried.
2) Hospital
- Cindy Krause was recently released from the hospital for a post-natal infection.
- Dr. Hanover is beginning human trials on an experimental treatment for into the mitigation of genetically predetermined diseases and disorders.
3) Police
- Initial social media reports on the Wild Camp raid indicated they were conducted by police.
- Officers were in the area within minutes of our emergence onto the road and assumed we were from the camp.
- Officer quoted in news article regarding Rail Trail deaths (discovering of bodies) was dismissive and potentially approving.
While these intersecting points could be unrelated, working under the assumption they are related leads me to the following theory: Dr. Hanover has requested the assistance of a group in the identification and obtainment of a specific patient type in order to conduct the initial phases of her treatment - without the knowledge or approval of the hospital or medical review boards. The group contacted is working with the police to 'clean up the streets' and address West Virginia's ever increasing drug problem.
As to the Theoretical 'group', Daniel gave me information regarding traffic on the Wilderness Ministries related website, which is as follows:

The radio “dean” of West Virginia broadcasters, Marvin Hammer joined Patriot WV Radio Corporation in 1976. Through the years Hammer’s assignments have spanned the gamut to include news, sports, and talk. A native of Summit Point in Jefferson County, Marvin began as a news anchor/reporter at WAJR in Morgantown while still attending West Virginia University. After graduating with honors from WVU, Hammer took over as news director at WAJR and began carving an identity as one of the leading conservative broadcasters in West Virginia. A founding father of PatriotNews, Hammer served as News Director until assuming the role of Vice President of Operations in 1991. This leads me to the final intersecting point, or interesting theme.
4) Difficulty Finding Information
- Colin and Daniel have utilized all avenues of investigation in regards to Dr. Hanover, with extremely limited results.
- The Camp was sterilized, with tents actively cut [which is not consistent with 'police raids'].
- Vague mentions on social media and the News regarding extremely concerning events [indicates a cover-up].
- Wilderness Ministries website is very vague, as was the part of the pamphlet recovered at the camp.
Wilhelm and Quentin indicated they would do an in-person walk-through of the Mason Jar. Wilhelm has also been running along the Rail Trail, when I spoke with him I suggested looking for a drug dealer due to the drugs in the systems of the bodies recovered along the trail. Additional information should be obtained on Officer Denton [the officer quoted in the article about the Rail Trail deaths], and a relatively safe plan of action should be discussed as to how we move forward.
Two additional kindred presented themselves to Elysium and our Prince this evening. Adelaide - an acquaintance of mine, and Rafael Salvadori. Adelaide is a Malkavian, who generally makes things more difficult than needed. Rafael is a Tzimisce, which I admit I do not have much experience with. Adelaide is working on an acquisition for me, and I can only hope she keeps her blades sheathed. The interactions with Rafael were genial enough. I assisted the two of them in the obtaining of a Haven within my position as Seneschal.
Reminiscing on Times Past
I had journeyed from Europe to America in the 1950s on a cruise-ship commonly used by Kindred for intercontinental travel. The ship, and later line, were infamous for sub-par record keeping and unexplained [investigated] deaths at sea. Kine used it to escape to new lands, assume new identities [Nazis, potentially compromised members of the Irish Republican Army , etc.], human trafficking, smuggling, etc. Due to the largely illegal enterprises and activities the ship was utilized for, Kindred related disappearances were easily explained or ignored so long as no mundane witnesses were left as loose-ends.
A trip I had anticipated to be banal, became tense and troublesome very quickly. While the Ship had a reputation for the high number of deaths and disappearances, the increasing volume and consistency had both Kindred and Kine on edge - with one very obvious exception.
Adelaide was, and is, a slender brunette with an energy about her that if just off enough to incline people towards caution. The groups of kine she sat with would lose members after a few days, and she did not seem to notice or care that this fact was very much picked up on.
One night, I happened to over-hear a more obviously degenerate group planning a ship-wide patrol, among other situationally astute stratagems. As it was a likely night for one of the Adelaide related disappearances, I made sure to check the more likely locations in order to ensure the Masquerade was maintained. The was a fortuitous decision, as I happened upon Adelaide throwing a male overboard, completely covered in blood. I will admit I was very short with her - as the group of kine was not far behind. I was able to get her well away from the area, changed, and cleaned before forcing her into a common area with me to create an alibi. Before the end of the evening, she told me I was best experienced in small doses and stabbed me.
Later, she apologized for the stabbing, explained her particular affliction - she is a Malkavian, a literal Lunatic - and her occupation (she is a curator). For me assistance, she gave me a slightly obscure occult text with interesting medical notations.
It was the beginning of an interesting, and often frustrating, amiable acquaintance.
Assessing Threats and Security
I have spoken with Roger regarding the obvious gap in security which had to have taken place in Elysium. Roger confirmed that his security is provided by his Sire - Abraham - and they are likely to be Blood-Bonded to him. Since he is paying/providing their services, it makes a lot of sense they would be monitoring our activities and reporting back. Roger was not concerned about this - which could be due to our Clan ties (to Clan and Sire). I will keep a weary eye on this, as the amount of attention being paid is concerning. There are, of course, perfectly normal and valid reason for it - for instance, Roger hadn't been Baron for a week before Abraham was contacted and assistance requested. He has already expended a decent about of money and influence in this venture.
However, if he continues to be as involved, we may as well not be considered our own Kingdom so much as an Extension of Chicago.
Ava has listed the potential threats as we know them. Wilhelm drove by the Mason Jar to do a quick assessment to rule our the presence of Weres; he stated he did not smell anything to indicate Weres were there recently and plans to do in person reconnaissance with Quentin at some point. As Ava and I are currently on restriction - she hates that I call it that - we cannot go (I am unsure as to how much help I would be).
I believe Wilhelm has developed a plan to start running along the rail trail of an evening as bait for whatever is killing 'junkies'. I personally find this plan less than ideal. I think it would be better for Wilhelm and Daniel to find the locations the bodies were found and do a bit of investigating to see if they pick anything up. If the Rail Trail is just a dumping ground, and not a hunting ground, being in the area just establishes a pattern or makes it more likely who ever is behind this would be able to recognize him later. I did not speak out against the plan, and so should be sure to express my concerns to Wilhelm at the soonest opportunity.
Ava also made note of the Hospital investigation I have been working on as a potential threat. I gave her a briefing on what information I have obtained, which included a bit that Colin was able to tell me before he left. I will admit the brief is not... as comprehensive as the information I have, but the pertinent details have all been shared. According to Colin's contacts at the hospital: she largely keeps to herself. She has a couch and shower in her office and often spends days at a time in the research suite without leaving. She leaves from time to time, but it is sporadic.
The events with the Officers has left me feeling I have been neglecting my studies. I will be putting more effort and time into my occult studies moving forward to address my personally perceived deficiencies.
The Evening After
I arrived at Elysium to find Ava, Quentin, and Wilhelm already present. Ava was in the process of detailing the events of the previous evening. Daniel arrived after me, and Quentin was presented with the bracelet, pamphlet, and cameras collected during our wonderful adventure. Quentin used his psychic powers to evaluate the items - I am not sure what was discovered exactly, as Roger came in in a destressed state (which resulted in theorizing and gossip from the other kindred) and I decided to seek the source to determine the issue.
Roger stated he had spent the largest part of his evening being berated by his Sire - that Abraham has 'eyes and ears everywhere' and "if we don't get this Kingdom into shape, we may see ourselves absorbed into someone else's domain." I find Abraham's knowledge of the events of the previous evening to be interesting and concerning, however, I used Roger's statement as an opening to address my thoughts on the state of our Kingdom. He is too used to false platitudes and mistook my approval of his actions to date as flattery, which is frustrating as I am not one for compliments in general and empty ones would not be given in these circumstances.
Establishing a Kingdom in this area is an interesting and challenging endeavor. Under usual circumstances, the our area would be under the Dominion of the Prince of Pittsburgh as the population is only just large enough to sustain a reasonable number of Kindred - the fact that Morgantown is ever expanding and is a College Town works very well in our favor, but it is unlikely we are the only ones who have identified this location for the opportunity it has presented.
Roger stated he believes he needs "a more organized and orderly kingdom" and "if we are to thrive, we need to recruit and retain ambitious, but restrained Kindred". I told him he has an issue with delegation and that currently we have more open roles within the Camarilla than we have Kindred. Our Kingdom is much more... progressive than others I have been part of, which could be out of necessity as of this moment. He has welcomed Nosferatu and Caitiff into our Elysium, appointed one to the Council. However, if he is going to be inclusive of other clans, he needs to grant them appointments.
I doubt it has been missed by all the Kindred that the Prince, Seneschal, and Sheriff are all Tremere.
Ava interrupted us at this point, followed shortly by Quintin, to update him with the information Quintin was able to glean from the obtained items, as well attempt to lower my standing in his eyes by outright condemning my choices in regards to the deaths of the police officers. She proceeded to attempt to place herself in a position of authority throughout the rest of the evening as well. It is likely her attempts to undermine me will continue going forwards - only time will tell as to whether she finds it fruitful. Personally, I think she does not understand how her clan is perceived by others in general.
I will admit I am surprised by her attitude in this matter. They were two large, aggressive, officers who did not respond to either of our attempts to de-escalate the situation. I am uncertain as to what outcome she would have preferred.
Say she knocked them down, I made them dizzy, and we were able to escape on foot far enough to meet Daniel's car. They were wearing body cams, which would have us on film, and it is possible they would have had Daniel's car on camera as well. We could have ended up in a high-speed pursuit and actually breached the Masquerade. Maybe in her mind, we would have gotten away scot-free and they would not expend energy trying to track us down, but that is not something that should be left to chance with the Kingdom being so new.
Roger was called away to meet with a representative from Abraham. He believes further assistance may be provided. I have concerns to raise with him in the event I am able to speak with him alone.
Following his departure, I attempted to ask Daniel and Wilhelm for their understanding of the information Quentin obtained, but was interrupted by Ava wanting to identify and rank potential threats we believe we may be facing. I am uncertain why she is attempting to establish herself as Lead on these, when she is better suited to scribe, but a Toreador is never happy if they are not somehow the center of attention. Threat assessment is being done regarding:
Deaths along the Rail Trail.
The Mason Jar.
Ava also made note of the hospital and the Wilderness Ministries, however those are on-going and frustratingly difficult to obtain information on. I may attempt to scry using the pamphlet and bracelet.
I apologized to Wilhelm and Daniel for any unpleasantness they have felt in regards to the death of the officers. They assured me they were fine with the decision.
The Wild Camp Investigation
It went much more poorly than anticipated, and while there is obviously something nefarious in relation to it there were no indications there is any supernatural influence.
Ava, Daniel, Wilhelm, and I travelled to the camp together. While we were there, we noticed: bleach had been poured on one tent and another was purposefully cut as opposed to rent apart. We discovered a pamphlet and a hospital discharge bracelet and followed the path of someone who made a run for it. The trail eventually lead to a road which Wilhelm was unable to work his way up to, so all three of us were tossed up by Daniel. I lost my phone upon landing, which was recovered by Daniel.
We followed the footprints along the road until it became a gravel loop through a yard. The resident came outside and shouted at me - Ava and I were visible at the time - before returning to his home. Police came and my attempt to hide was foiled by my lack of coordination.
The officers were hostile and aggressive. They ignored everything I said, how I said it, and my demeanor. They pulled their weapons on me, which resulted in Ava stumbling out of hiding and reinforcing my story. They ignored everything she said, how she said it, her demeanor, and her appearance. When they attempted secure us, we used their proximity to our benefit and killed them in a manner that could be accomplished by an actual junkie.
Still, Roger was not pleased and placed Ava and I under restriction for an undisclosed length of time.
While the deaths of the two officers is problematic and therefor annoying, I have no regrets in that regard.
Active Research and Interesting Pursuits Pt. 2
Daniel gave me the information he has obtained while in Elysium. The information he provided is as follows:
Rutledge has been on the force some time, but hasn't advanced very far. He puts in the bare minimum and most people seem to like him. Based on his social media habits he is gullible but generally the typical boomer. Mostly he shares memes of American flags and crosses, but he generally steers clear of controversial topics.
Officer Chatham Sargasso is a relatively new recruit, he has already faced several disciplinary actions and his last job was working at a mobile phone store. He was let go for sexually harassing a customer. Based on his social media he... well he is trash. He is barely literate and his feed is filled with racist, homophobic garbage, but also memes about god and not judging anyone, also weed, dirt bikes, and him shirtless... sooooo many pictures of him shirtless. He has obviously been in and out of multiple relationships and every one of them is apparently a "crazy bitch" and he brags about cheating on them constantly. He brags about his brother who works at some local church who "keeps his soul safe for me while I fuck bitches and enjoy my life" .
Dr. Deborah Hanover has ZERO social media presence and there seems to be very little anyone has to say about her. Neither positive or negative. The only information you gather is from her public profile through academic searches. You are able to find her listed in a wide array of research papers and the expected topics, but there are hundreds.
I sadly don't have the knowledge to parse this adequately for you but can direct you to any of it.
While his efforts and any information is greatly appreciated, I am frustrated.
When I had originally decided on this course of action, it had seemed very straightforward. This endeavor is becoming all the more complicated with each move that is made, and the lack of information is making the most logical plan of action difficult to determine. I can hope Colin will have a bit more information on Dr. Hanover, but I am no longer especially hopeful. The fact that there is little in the way of readily accessible information, and the difficulty in obtaining the information we have, has lead me to suspect supernatural involvement. I will continue to pursue my secondary plans, but will need to make the Prince aware of my suspicions.
I spoke with a number of kindred about infiltrating the protesters - I contacted Marie specifically as it is the kind of mischief she is want to enjoy - and attempting additional utilization of the guards, as my initial attempt with Officer Sargasso did not bear fruit. Ava expressed interest in using her charms, and when given all the relevant intel expressed a want to kill him and be done with it - I do not have a problem with that eventuality, I would prefer it if she would wait until he can be made use of first.
On the subject of Ava - I will be meeting with her and Quentin this evening to investigate the police raid on Wild Camp. I had also contacted them about ancient texts received by WVU, whether they will want my continued assistance is questionable for this.
Two new kindred presented to Elysium: Kenzai and Wilhelm. Kenzai is fresh from the embrace and does not know anything - it has been luck that has kept her from breaching the masquerade. I have made myself available to provide any information she may need going forward. I explained clans, our [basic] origins, and that feeding should be done often and in secret. I have not explained the Masquerade as yet, but will endeavor to do as quickly as possible. It is my hope that her Sire can be identified and sanctioned - preferably killed. Wilhelm stated he is a Caitiff and has indicated he would like to look into the Wild Camp Raid as well.
Daniel has indicated he would be attempting to access the camera feeds for the hospital in order to assist in the entry of the suit and obtaining any electronically stored information.
This is looking to be a very busy week.
Active Research and Interesting Pursuits
I had heard rumors whispered of an experimental treatment moving into human trials at the university hospital.
As I am always researching and keeping as current as possible in all medical procedures, I would of course have been curious as to the treatment particulars regardless. The fact that there are people calling the treatment 'playing God' - as though medical science hasn't been since its inception - provided all the motivation I require to actively pursue this information now, rather than wait for the study results to be published.
Through the efforts of the local Nosferatu, namely Colin Hurt, it was discovered: Deborah Hanover Is a visiting scientist who came with her own research team. Her process is very labor intensive and she has been granted and entire treatment suite that consists of 2 treatment rooms, a research facility, and a secure processing room. The protests have cause the hospital to up security for the Private suite, however there was relatively high security internally before the protests got troublesome.
I went to the hospital to perform my own recognizance, at which point I discovered the suite is located in a basement level with two university affiliated guards stationed outside - identified as Officer Chatham Sargasso and 2nd Lt. Rutledge Horner. I attempted to cultivate Officer Chatham as a source by leaving my contact information with him, based on a positive physical response he had to my form, which he has not attempted to use to date; this is only a little surprising as while I am particularly comely, my reserved personality tends to show through despite my best efforts. They did mention there is additional, private, security located within the suite, which is very problematic.
Due to the nature of the obstacles I am facing - namely that my current favorable kindred are unable to assist in the physical obtainment of access - I have decided on a more nuanced plan of action.
I have again contacted the local Nosferatu - Colin Hurt and Daniel Cooper - requesting any information they can find on the individuals identified, with special focus on Dr. Hanover. If I can meet her in person, I can attempt to infiltrate the suite via invitation and, if she is particularly unwilling, I could force compliance through more forthright methods. As a secondary plan, I will see if any kindred in the area would like to infiltrate the protests with the eye to giving them the location of the suite and causing enough of a disturbance that the suite can be cleared and access obtained that way.
I am ever hopeful that a more nuanced approach will work, creating ghouls or using other clan connections for protection is not particularly ideal; I am not completely adverse, however.
