The Guard

The link between worlds manifested itself in the form of several large gates along with shifting smaller ones. Once it was learned that the larger gates could be linked for instant travel a brotherhood formed among those who commanded such links. Initially this group focused on documenting passage through and sharing news across the portal cities. In moments of crisis, though, they leaned on each other and realized the important of both the portals and their protection. This brotherhood was cemented when a powerful Necromancer began marching on one of the larger portal cities, with intent to capture it and control the portal. In the lead up to his arrival at the city, this unofficial collection of companions formed a fail-safe plan to stop him from crossing through. They realized that only they had the means and will to make the decision and guard the connection between these worlds. It was decided that they would sacrifice anything to protect it.
When the portals closed, there were guard stranded on all sides. On Earth, it was hundreds of years before members of the guard were able to re-establish networks. On Home, they were split for a time, but quickly regrouped and resumed their vigil. Once the threat of the Necromancer had passed, the Guardians on Home attempted to re-open the portals, but something had gone wrong on the Earth side and they were unable to get through.
