Mixolys

Mixolys is the world of song, where words hold power and feelings hold meaning.   In the beginning, magic was formed from the connection between human minds and Pactones, creatures capable of manifesting phenomena from feelings. The relationship was delightfully symbiotic, and Pact Magic of all kinds was a cornerstone of society.   As technology and research progressed, the intelligentsia of the world formulated a series of questions. Would it be possible to standardize Pact Magic for humans? If so, what new avenues and functions could be unlocked from such a feat? From these questions, the first Song Servers emerged with the intention of replicating Pact Magic's functions in a more controlled way.   There was a problem, however; human minds were not capable of synchronizing with the servers. There was no safe way to connect human minds to the machinery and maintain the planned functionality. The devised solution was to create special artificial beings, the Leyaloids, who would be engineered specifically to communicate with the servers. After much experimentation, the first Leyaloid, Belfia, was born, and then several others after her.   The Leyaloids had one fatal flaw: due to their minds being hosted on a server, they were unable to synchronize with Pactones and use Pact Magic. The experiment was not deemed a complete failure, but the first group of Leyaloids faded into mysterious obscurity... until Belfia's daughter with a human demonstrated the ability to use Pact Magic. On top of this, the server's automatic update function gave her a registry on the server, allowing her to use Server Songs as well. This next generation, referred to as Cross-Leys, caused a boom in Song Science research as researchers scrambled to make use of their server connections and their pact magic abilities.   In the end, Cross-Ley descendants of the Leyaloids had two methods to use magic with. Pact Magic, from synchronizing with a Pactone, functioned as it always had. Server Magic, produced from a mental link to a song server, evolved from using two rudimentary code-like languages to one organic-feeling language. This language, Melodicode, is what most song magic is typically sung in nowadays.   Mixolys is in an era of relative peace and progress. However, behind the scenes movements and secrets create small pockets of unrest, and the future becomes ever more uncertain...
