Samwise Raven

Appearance

Sam has been described (by Izzy) as looking like a human pencil. In reality, they are tall and skinny, making this a decently accurate description. They have bright green eyes which often look like they're glowing, and their hair is spiky and neon blue. Sam has been told that they look vaguely like an anime character. To this day, this is the best compliment Sam has ever received. They mostly wear ripped, skinny jeans and over-sized t-shirts with various texts, but has also been known to sport the occasional plaid button-down. When attending events requiring fancier attire, Sam prefers a simple suit. Whenever Sam feels embarrassed, their skin takes on a slightly green tint. However, when they are angry, their face becomes red and their eyes glow with electricity. They also have a set of retractable, razor-sharp teeth which only come out when they're truly furious. Sam's eyes also glow when underwater, allowing them to see clearly even at great depths.

Personality

Sam is guarded and values their privacy above nearly all else. This stems from an early exposure to small-minded and prejudiced people who led Sam to believe that they are flawed because of their nature as a hybrid. Because of this, Sam struggles with making friends, although they do not mind this too much as they prefer to be on their own anyway. They enjoy hiding away in their bedroom and binge-watching anime, reading fantasy and sci-fi novels, and listening to K-pop and metal. However, they also enjoy spending time with the select few people who have managed to earn the title of friend. Sam is clever and quiet for the most part, but when surrounded by people they trust, they can speak on a topic which interests them for a long time.
Sam is a skilled Witch. They are an aspiring traveler, although they prefer to observe rather than to interact. They are good with Anthropology Magic and enjoy playing around with the newer area of tech-spells. Although they are half-Mermaid, Sam does not have a strong connection with that side of their personality. For the most part, it has given them nothing but a load of insecurities. Despite this, Sam is able to breathe underwater and will grow webbed skin between their phalanges which makes them an excellent swimmer. Although they do not realize this until later in life, Sam's Mermaid qualities also makes them an excellent healer.

Family & Friends

Although they do not willingly admit this very often, Sam is quite fond of their dad. They perceive Omar to be a distinctly un-cool person too social for his own good, but they also admire his outgoing nature. Although the beginning of their relationship was rocky, Sam and Omar have grown decently close over the years. Omar treats Sam with respect and love, and in return, Sam makes fun of their dad for being corny and a bit of a dork. They both enjoy talking shit about the DeVaughns and are more loyal to their families than either of them realize.
Despite living with Gekko for the first five years of their life, Sam is not close with their mother. The memories they have of their time in the ocean with the other Mermaids are not pleasant. They did not think that Sam belonged with them, being half-Witch and all, and Sam was relieved when Gekko finally decided that it was time for them to go live with their father on land. Unfortunately, Sam was met with further prejudice in Midnight, this time for their Mermaid qualities. They largely blame their mother for their misfortunes in life, including the curse of being born in the first place.
Sam's two closest friends are Izzy and Caspian. They met Caspian during the short stint they spent at Midnight High School. There, they were both victims of bullying, mainly at the hands of Sena DeVaughn and her group of friends. When Sam was finally, mercifully, pulled out of school and permitted to do homeschooling instead, Caspian was left to fend for himself. Despite this, the two remained good friends. They occasionally run into one another in town, but when Izzy arrived and began to draw Sam into the public more often, the three of them quickly started to hangout. Sam believes their cousin to be a short-tempered and wholly annoying person more unlike Sam than anyone else, but they also consider her to be their best friend. They know that she has taught them as much as they have taught her, although they would never admit this to Izzy. She encourages Sam to try things they otherwise would never think to try and in return, Sam tries to reel in Izzy's wilder side. Neither of them are very successful.
For most of their life, Sam did not understand love. Romantic love, that is. The idea of meeting someone with whom you wanted to share the rest of your life with seemed as bizarre as freely going to a party. It was a foreign concept with which Sam had no interest in familiarizing themselves. Then they met Alice. She was the prettiest girl they'd ever met, and she was nice and smart. She knew close to nothing about Magic or Witches or Mermaids, nor really anything else about Sam's world. Alice was everything Sam was not; outgoing, friendly, eager to explore, and extremely considerate of others and their feelings. Perhaps this was why Sam fell so hard for her. Or maybe it was the fact that Alice, despite her many fine qualities, was just as insecure and confused as Sam. In the end, the reason did not matter much. Against all odd, they had found one another and they had fallen in love. That was all that mattered.
