Ghetto locations

Nestled along the banks of a winding river, the city of Zobeck unveils itself as a captivating tapestry of stone, wattle, and daub. Its thriving prosperity is evident in the wealth displayed through the use of slate and tile roofs, a mark of distinction that sets it apart from mere thatched settlements. Yet, it is not the outer façade of Zobeck that captures the imagination, but rather the secrets concealed beneath each roof and within every quarter. Among them, none are as enigmatic and intriguing as the labyrinthine pathways, diminutive doors, and low ceilings of the fabled Kobold Ghetto.   For those of larger stature, entering this district often evokes a sense of confinement and bustling congestion, as if the very air itself is too narrow to accommodate their presence. Within these narrow confines, a world of wonders and curiosities unfolds, captivating the senses and igniting the imagination. Allow me to illuminate the highlights of this extraordinary place.

Ghetto Gate and Water Gate

The reputation of the Ghetto precedes itself, and its gritty notoriety is in no small part due to the formidable presence of kobold guards and an intricate web of traps that encircle the sole surface gate. Whispers of poison-laced spikes on the portcullis and treacherous pit traps have spread far and wide, leaving no doubt about the dangers that await the unwary. It is not just physical defenses that the gate boasts, for pre-aimed fiery ballista bolts and other deadly weapons stand ready to repel any intruders.   While tales of these well-known fortifications circulate among the inhabitants of Zobeck, it is the clandestine traps concealed within the labyrinthine streets that remain largely unconfirmed but fervently discussed. Ranging from humiliating pranks to life-threatening snares, these hidden perils serve as constant reminders of the Ghetto's untamed nature.    Adding to the mystique, two furnace gargoyles stand as formidable guardians, their presence evoking a sense of foreboding. Rumors persist of similar defenses surrounding the underground gate to Lillefor, where aging bulettes, retired from their mining duties, maintain a watchful eye. The Water Gate, on the other hand, conceals its defenses behind clever disguises, leaving unsuspecting interlopers vulnerable to its well-hidden perils.   Gaining entry to the Ghetto is an arduous and time-consuming process, encouraging the path of least resistance through bribery, particularly during the nocturnal hours when the gates are closed and kobolds rest. A customary offering of 5 gold pieces for humans and 10 for dwarves can usually secure passage. Elves, gnomes, and halflings are often met with repeated rejections, but their persistence can yield entrance for a minimum bribe of 20 gold pieces. As the guards are keen to remind all who seek passage, access to "the Quarter" is a privilege, not a guarantee.   However, even with permission granted, one should not expect a smooth passage. Those attempting to deceive or intimidate their way through only invite suspicion from the ever-watchful guards, prompting thorough searches for contraband. With little regard for personal belongings, kobold shackles are employed, and the contents of backpacks, purses, sacks, and even scroll cases are unceremoniously dumped onto the ground, sometimes resulting in the unfortunate breakage of fragile items such as potions or vials.   Similar search procedures are applied to individuals seeking to bribe their way out of the Ghetto or those who fail to meet the required payments. Those lacking a trusted kobold companion or those who simply appear burdened with excess coinage also find themselves subject to scrutiny. For the guards, shakedowns are an integral part of their livelihood. The Water Gate operates under a comparable system, but since its primary purpose is cargo transport, individuals passing through receive heightened, often unwanted, attention. Navigating the complex dance of entry and exit from the Ghetto demands caution, guile, and a willingness to endure the scrutiny of the vigilant kobold guards.

Chain Bridges

Under the rule of Quetelmak, the resourceful kobolds have ingeniously constructed a series of small bridges using interconnected iron chains and buoyant barrels. These unique structures serve as vital connections, linking the kobold territory with other districts of the city and even spanning the mighty Argent River during the quiet hours of the night when traffic is scarce. However, these chain bridges hold more than mere convenience within their sturdy frames.   They have become favored conduits for smugglers seeking to evade the burdensome gate taxes that contribute to the city's coffers. These covert paths may provide passage to Mharoti spies or sinister worshippers of the dark gods, operating beyond the scrutiny of the authorities. Mayor Olleck, initially staunchly opposed to these chain bridges, has gradually recognized their strategic importance. Each attempt by the City Watch to seize control of the bridges has been met with swift retaliation as the kobolds swiftly sever the chains and detach the barrels, only to recover them later. Faced with this resilient opposition, Mayor Olleck has begun to reconsider her stance.   Acknowledging the practical benefits these bridges bring to the kobold population, Mayor Olleck has initiated negotiations with King of Kings Quetelmak. The discussions revolve around the establishment of a new "Bridge Tax" specifically targeting the smugglers who exploit the bridges for their illicit activities. Both the mayor and the kobold king recognize the potential value of a kobold-controlled portion of the city treasury, a concept that aligns their interests and sparks a sense of mutual agreement.   In this delicate dance of power and pragmatism, the chain bridges become symbols of both challenge and compromise between the human authorities and the kobold community, reflecting the evolving dynamics of Zobeck's intricate political landscape.

The Dock and Ferry (#48)

Nestled discreetly along the riverside, the kobolds maintain a solitary dock primarily used for fishing boats and modest merchant vessels. Its shadowed reputation as a smuggling hub has earned it a certain mystique, attributed in part to the clandestine nature of its nocturnal operations. Under the cover of darkness, vessels arrive and depart without the guidance of lanterns, arousing suspicion among the city's inhabitants. Curiously, the Citadel, the ruling authority of Zobeck, seems to turn a blind eye to these alleged smuggling activities. This leniency can be attributed to the understanding that such illicit endeavors often bring in essential resources required by the kobolds for their mining operations and intricate clockwork creations. These much-needed supplies likely originate from hostile nations such as Morgau and Doresh, or from the treacherous Niflheim road.   At the docks, a modest fishing fleet finds shelter, and a solitary ferry gracefully shuttles kobolds across the river to the mines situated east of the city. Operating ceaselessly, day and night, the ferry follows a tight schedule, making the round trip approximately every 40 minutes. A nominal fee of 1 copper piece allows Small or Medium creatures, up to a maximum of 12, to traverse the river's expanse. However, larger or heavier beings, such as horses or other substantial creatures, must take the arduous path to the Puffing Bridge in the Dock District.   Captain Kandrepoor II, the helmsman of the ferry, dons smoked goggles during daylight hours to shield his eyes from the sun's piercing glare upon the water. Due to the perceived lack of scrutiny from clockwork sentinels or human Watchmen, rumors have proliferated about his association with rogues, smugglers, and ne'er-do-wells. Whispers persist that he discreetly aids their passage out of the city, offering a forgetfulness of their crossing for a mere 5 gold pieces. Some even speculate that Kandrepoor possesses control over multiple kobold smuggling gangs, while others contend that he possesses the uncanny ability to locate them for a modest fee. Such rumors, though unverified, continue to circulate, adding to the enigmatic allure surrounding the kobold captain and his activities at the dock.

The Undercity

Beneath the bustling streets of the Ghetto lies an intricate undercity, a labyrinth of interconnected warrens, cellars, narrow passageways, and diminutive doors that the kobolds have come to cherish as their own. Within these subterranean depths, one can find a plethora of kobold establishments, including taverns, sleeping quarters, shops, and even dire weasel kennels. While visitors to this underground realm often find themselves discomforted by the confined spaces and an ever-present hint of reptilian musk, the kobolds themselves consider it a cozy and familiar environment.   The Ghetto's undercity is not only limited to its own confines but also extends its reach, forming connections with the Cartways at multiple access points and the nearby River Derry. However, a hidden secret lies within these depths, unbeknownst to most humans—the undercity also serves as a gateway to another, grander metropolis: Lillefor, the sprawling kobold city located over a hundred and forty miles away. An active and vibrant trade flourishes between Lillefor and the Ghetto, with a constant flow of goods. Foodstuffs, wines, and wooden wares make their descent into the Ghetto, while precious metalwork, ores, and enchanted artifacts such as carrion beetle armor and everlit lanterns ascend to Lillefor.   It is in this undercity that the kobolds openly engage in their other prominent profession—smuggling. Highly taxed items, such as wines, silks, spices, black lotus, and poppywine, find a lucrative market within the Ghetto. However, the taxman's grasp is skillfully evaded when these goods arrive through the clandestine channels of kobold mules, caravan beetles, and courier lizards from Lillefor. Ghetto merchants gleefully circumvent the tax collectors, conducting these transactions without interference. The soldiers of the Citadel and the esteemed members of the Watch, for their part, have thus far chosen not to pursue these matters, allowing the thriving smuggling trade to continue its clandestine operations undisturbed.

Pit of the Fierce Lynx

One of the more sinister and illicit corners of the Undercity is the infamous Lynx Pit—an underground gladiatorial arena where bloodthirsty spectacles unfold under the watchful eye of Yshka Bishka, a cunning and conniving fight promoter (a male kobold rogue of considerable skill, holding the rank of 8). Within this grim arena, a macabre business thrives as roosters, hounds, and even humans are pitted against each other in savage combat. Occasionally, the fights take a more personal turn, featuring knife duels or honor clashes between kobold lovers, providing a twisted variety to the gruesome proceedings. The fights occur on a weekly basis within a circular pit, thoughtfully designed for easy cleansing after each night's brutal spectacle.   Victors of the Lynx Pit are lavished with temporary adoration, elevated to a position of revered status akin to kobold royalty, for a day or even an entire week. The entire Ghetto becomes enthralled by these exhilarating battles, their attention captured by the relentless violence unfolding before their eyes. However, it must be noted that the entirety of this underground operation operates outside the boundaries of the law, flouting the statutes of the land. Mayor Olleck has made her disapproval known and desires nothing more than to bring an end to this gruesome enterprise. Yet, her willingness to deploy the necessary Watch guards to shut it down completely remains questionable.   In a recent act of desperation, Mayor Olleck issued a proclamation, offering a substantial reward of 500 gold pieces to anyone capable of apprehending Yshka Bishka, either for questioning or, quite explicitly, for permanent disposal due to his "crimes against nature." The mayor would undoubtedly find solace in his demise, should he meet an untimely end while in custody.

The Kings Square

Within the confines of the Ghetto, where glimpses of the sky are a rare and cherished sight, there exists a notable expanse known as King's Square. This open space provides respite from the cramped quarters and allows the heavens to peek through, casting a gentle illumination upon the proceedings below. Dominating the square is a towering edifice that houses the esteemed owl roosts, serving as dwelling grounds for the favored flying companions of the various kobold lordlings. It is here that the denizens of the Ghetto congregate to partake in vibrant celebrations, often coinciding with religious or civic events, typically aligned with the full moon or new moon.   The focal point of King's Square is none other than the magnificent Silver Palace of the King of Kings (refer to §46), a grand testament to opulence and extravagance. This architectural marvel boasts a facade adorned with marble, albeit marred by tasteless statuary and excessive gilding, leaving no room for doubt regarding the king's affluence and authority. The entrances to the Silver Palace are vigilantly guarded by a contingent of 50 heavily armored kobold sentinels, ensuring the security of the royal abode. Surrounding the palace are the bustling offices of mine sub-chiefs, assayers, smelting barons, and priests dedicated to the veneration of various kobold deities.   The square itself is a tapestry of statues, symbols of status, and the insatiable thirst for power that pervades the ambitious hearts of the kobold elite. King's Square also serves as a vibrant meeting place for a diverse range of individuals within the Ghetto. Merchants hailing from the kobold community, fishmongers with their fresh catches, recruiters seeking labor for the mines, couriers darting between destinations, freelance clockworkers showcasing their skills, and even hired smugglers seeking lucrative contracts—these disparate figures converge upon the square, breathing life into the nocturnal hours. Under the cover of darkness, an assortment of activities unfolds, from lively songs and awe-inspiring acrobatics to duels of skill and even rituals involving the art of scarification. King's Square pulsates with a vibrant energy, a testament to the dynamic spirit that thrives within the heart of the Ghetto.

Pentrick's Mundane Magic Items

Nestled near the bustling Ghetto Gate, a chaotic display of oddities, trinkets, and assorted curios spills forth from a canvas-covered stall. Here, amidst the vibrant street markets of Zobeck, one can find Pentrick, a shifty and enterprising kobold, perpetually on the lookout for a lucrative opportunity. Despite already living a life of relative extravagance, even by kobold standards, this cunning creature is perpetually driven by a ceaseless desire for more.   Pentrick, a devious and wicked entrepreneur, holds ownership over a workhouse nestled within the cramped warrens beneath the city. This clandestine establishment is teeming with indentured servants who toil tirelessly to produce a myriad of simple arcane trinkets. Never far from his grasp is Pentrick's prized possession, a clockwork beetle that serves as a testament to his ingenuity. Similar magical creations, tailored to suit a wide range of budgets, are readily available for purchase.   To dissuade unwelcome visitors, Pentrick has artfully rigged his stall with a handful of traps (refer to "Street Traps" on pg. 45). Furthermore, concealed beneath the low, drapery-covered table, lies a trapdoor leading directly into the nearby warrens, a labyrinthine network infused with an array of menacing traps. Whispers among visitors reveal a secret phrase, "Little is bigger where the river winds," a somewhat transparent ploy designed to provoke admiration for Pentrick and his kind. Those who utter these words gain access to the more intriguing and coveted items within his inventory.   Pentrick's magic items, renowned and sought after by the affluent merchants who populate the bustling Free City, provide simple yet effective solutions to mundane worries. Both visitors and residents alike find themselves reliant on the utilitarian offerings provided by Pentrick. It is these humble yet enchanting objects that draw customers from all walks of life to the vibrant and captivating confines of the Ghetto.

Scaler's Alley

Scaler's Alley, a notorious and perilous corner of the Ghetto, has earned its fearsome reputation. At the heart of this treacherous enclave resides Scaler, a winged lizardfolk of formidable stature, standing as tall as a dwarf and possessing an equal breadth. The alley bears his name, and both locals and visitors who value their safety take great pains to steer clear of its dangerous confines.   The buildings that line Scaler's Alley and its surrounding area are shabby and dilapidated, exuding an air of neglect. Outside the entrance to the alley, kobold inebriates and members of street gangs loiter, their presence adding to the atmosphere of squalor. The alley itself carries a distinct odor, a peculiar blend of burning lard and the scent of decayed remnants.   Occasionally, a haunting whistling sound, reminiscent of steam escaping through metal, can be heard emanating from its depths. As one ventures further into the alley, a dense smoke drifts towards the neighboring buildings, obscuring visibility beyond a mere 15 feet. The structures that line the alley appear haphazardly constructed, a patchwork of scavenged materials, with rooftops towering four stories above the grimy streets below. Surprisingly, the sky remains visible along the entire length of the alley, a striking contrast to the enclosed and foreboding atmosphere.   Taking on the shape of an inverted L, Scaler's Alley is a labyrinth of traps, meticulously designed to ensnare the unwary. Guarding the rooftops with a watchful eye is the notorious Slinger's Ambush Gang, an ever-present threat to anyone foolish enough to venture into their domain. The combination of hidden perils and the constant vigilance of Scaler and his associates makes this infamous alley an area to be avoided by those seeking personal safety.

The Royal Workshops (#47)

The workshops within the Ghetto are among the most tightly secured areas, strictly off-limits to visitors. Guarded by the kings themselves, these entrances are fortified with ferocious weasel kennels and a formidable array of guards, traps, and clockwork guardians. The purpose of these extensive security measures is to protect the invaluable treasures housed within.   Within these restricted workshops, a diverse range of craftsmen ply their trades. Jeweler's workshops glisten with precious gems and delicate creations, while distilleries produce fine spirits that are highly sought after. Geargrinding workshops resonate with the rhythmic sounds of machinery, as skilled artisans craft intricate clockwork mechanisms. Armories dedicated to trap-making house an arsenal of tools and devices designed to confound and ensnare.   Among the workshops, alchemical laboratories buzz with experimentation and the creation of potent concoctions. Smuggling dens serve as secretive hubs for illicit activities, while traditional armories specialize in producing mail armor of unparalleled quality, rivaling even the craftsmanship of the elves. These workshops, with their rich assortment of skills and treasures, are the well-guarded domains of the kings within the Ghetto, ensuring that their prized possessions and valuable creations remain protected from prying eyes.

The Defenders workshop

Within these walls, an extraordinary collection of weapons and armor awaits, all meticulously crafted to cater to the unique physiques of kobolds and similarly sized creatures. Each piece is a testament to the impeccable standards of kobold craftsmanship, ensuring both functionality and deadly efficiency.   Weapons of various types adorn the racks and display cases, ranging from daggers and shortswords to bows and crossbows, each meticulously sized and balanced for optimal use by kobolds. What sets these weapons apart is their inclusion of highly questionable grooving, specifically designed to accommodate the application of poisonous substances. The grooves are strategically placed to enhance the effectiveness of poison delivery, allowing kobold poisoners to coat their weapons with ease and precision.   In addition to the general arsenal, there are weapons tailored to exploit the vulnerabilities of specific species. For instance, the workshop offers arrows like the dwarfbane and elfbane arrows, meticulously crafted to deliver devastating blows to these particular adversaries. These specialized weapons are designed with intricate details and knowledge of the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of their intended targets.   The armory also showcases a wide range of armor, meticulously sized and shaped to fit the unique physiology of kobolds. Crafted with exceptional attention to detail, the armors provide reliable protection while ensuring agility and maneuverability in combat. Kobold armorers take pride in their work, employing ingenious techniques and using the finest materials available to create armors that meet the highest standards of quality.   For kobolds seeking weapons and armor that not only fit them perfectly but also incorporate unique features tailored to their needs and adversaries, this workshop stands as a haven. The weapons and armor created within these walls embody the craftsmanship and ingenuity of kobold artisans, reflecting their dedication to producing equipment of the highest caliber.

Dire Weasel Kennels

The trainers in this establishment are renowned for producing the most exceptional fighting weasels in the Ghetto. They offer a diverse selection of breeds, each with its own unique characteristics and capabilities, catering to the preferences and needs of discerning customers. Among the breeds available are the black, silent nightfeet weasels known for their stealth and agility. These weasels excel in covert operations and are highly prized for their ability to move swiftly and silently in the darkness.   For those seeking a more ferocious and aggressive companion, the vicious ratting sport weasels are a popular choice. These weasels possess a tenacious nature and are specifically trained for ratting and hunting small game, displaying remarkable hunting instincts and relentless determination.   On the other end of the spectrum, there are the pure white and showy kingsruff weasels, prized for their striking appearance and regal demeanor. These weasels are often favored by those who seek a companion with an impressive presence and enjoy showcasing their pets.   Weekly fights are organized, providing an opportunity for these formidable weasels to demonstrate their skills and compete against each other. These events attract significant attention, and heavy betting is common among the spectators who are enthralled by the excitement and spectacle of the fights. The trainers take great pride in their weasels, investing time and effort into their training, ensuring that they are well-conditioned and ready for combat. Whether for companionship, sport, or clandestine purposes, the weasels bred and trained by these professionals are considered the finest available, and their reputation extends beyond the borders of the Ghetto.

The Distillery

This brewery and distillery, while considered unappealing to humans, dwarves, and elves, holds a special allure for kobolds. It specializes in the production of unique and unconventional alcoholic beverages that cater to the distinctive tastes of kobold connoisseurs.   The brewery's recipes often incorporate unusual ingredients such as fermented rat and moldering potato, resulting in flavors and aromas that may be off-putting to non-kobolds. However, for kobold adventurers, this establishment offers a treasure trove of delightful and potent spirits. Among the popular spirits available are Wormbottom wine, known for its robust flavor and earthy undertones. Tannery's lark is another favored choice, featuring a peculiar blend of ingredients that create a distinct and memorable taste. Roachling's get is a spirit that captures the essence of the Ghetto, evoking the unique atmosphere and character of the kobold community.   It's worth noting that these spirits are banned from consumption in the rest of town, indicating their potent and perhaps divisive nature. Kobold PCs can indulge in these exclusive libations, with prices starting at 10 silver pieces per cup. The more one is willing to spend, the more exquisite and rare the spirits they can enjoy. While the brewery and distillery may not appeal to everyone's palate, for kobolds seeking unique and flavorful experiences, this establishment is a hidden gem worth exploring. It captures the essence of kobold culture and provides a taste of the Ghetto that cannot be found elsewhere.

The Night Ship

This workshop serves as a bustling warehouse and a haven for smugglers in the Ghetto. It acts as a central hub for the transportation of goods between various locations such as the river, the Great Northern Road, the mines, and even the dark road to Lillefor, the kobold metropolis. If a kobold is in search of a particular item, this workshop is the go-to place to find it.   The workshop's inventory is incredibly diverse, offering a wide range of goods and commodities. Exotic foods, including rare delicacies, can be found here, tempting the taste buds of adventurous kobolds. Heatstones, which provide warmth and comfort in the cold underground, are available for purchase as well. For those with more unconventional preferences, spiced humanoid meats may be found, catering to the peculiar palates of some kobolds.   In addition to food and provisions, the workshop offers a selection of fine poisons specifically designed for traps, ensuring that kobolds have access to effective tools for their craft. It is also a source for forbidden tools and forbidden lore, providing access to knowledge and artifacts that may be restricted or prohibited elsewhere. The ever-changing nature of the stock in this workshop adds to its allure and sense of mystery. Goods arrive and depart frequently, often packaged in shipping crates with labels that are difficult to decipher, further enhancing the clandestine atmosphere.   For kobolds seeking rare and sought-after items, this workshop serves as a treasure trove. Its strategic location and connections to various routes make it an ideal place for acquiring goods that are otherwise hard to find. However, it is important to exercise caution and discretion when dealing with the clandestine activities that take place within its walls.

As a result, many of the tools and goods available here cannot be found anywhere else. Clockworkers will find a wide selection of specialized tools that enhance their abilities, including masterwork clockwork tools, which are highly sought after for their exceptional quality. These tools are available for purchase at a price of 400 gp, reflecting their superior craftsmanship and attention to detail.   For kobold inventors and enthusiasts of clockwork engineering, this workshop is a treasure trove, providing access to essential components and tools that fuel their creative endeavors.
