Eriador

This region was most famous for hosting the Shire and the Kingdom of Arnor. Thus, this region was vital in the defeat of the Witch King during his rule over Angmar. This region also hosts elf and dwarf realms critical to the defeat of Melkor in the First Age. By the War of the Ring though, it was mostly depopulated. The result was a mainly untamed land. Trolls and orcs were more common here than other regions, but not much of a problem. The main populated areas were Lindon, the Blue Mountains, the Shire and Bree.   Most of the humans in this area were hunter gatherers. The Rangers were the most famous inhabitants outside the Hobbits. The Grey Company was formed here and Aragorn's childhood was spent here.

Geography

The region is bounded by the Blue Mountains in the West and the Misty Mountains in the east. It is 675 miles from east-to-west, around 690 miles from north-to-south. Lowlands were the dominant terrain, but there were some minor hills. These were concentrated in the Shire, the core regions of the former kingdom of Arnor and near the Misty Mountains. Thus mainly in the northern portions of the region and the far east.   The climate was dominated by warm and moist prevailing winds coming from the Blue Mountains. Cold and dry winds came from the north. The overall climate was mainly humid with mild but increasingly cold winters.

Fauna & Flora

Grasslands were the most common habitat. There were scattered forests and scrub land further north.

Natural Resources

There was originally a massive forest that covered most of the region. The extensive grasslands were the result of cutting trees for ship building and farming. This, combined with the main culture remaining is the hobbits, suggests that the main natural resource left is highly fertile soil. There were a few trade routes. Rivers were the most common, but there was one road heading north to south and another east to west.
